0.31.3 - alt.binz tray icon unresponsive
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:35:54 am »
When NZB article collections have finished downloading and alt.binz has moved onto extracting the contained files, it will become inaccessible to me.  I have alt.binz minimised to tray, when this happens, no context menu will happen on a right mouse button press over the tray icon.  No unminimisation from the tray will happen, on a left mouse button press over the tray icon.  This will continue until eventually a pop up message happens from the tray icon telling me that the article collection finished downloading.  This may happen after a few minutes, this may happen after an hour.  At this point, the tray icon will be responsive again.

I have been downloading article collections today where the splitting of the included file was done through the PAR process.  So, opening up the PAR file in QuickPar joins the split files into the contained file.  The previously mentioned problem has happened repeatedly for each extraction attempt (unsuccessful extraction attempt).

It has been happening for all versions of alt.binz since I started using it.  Thats from back at 0.31.1 at least.  I upgraded to 0.31.3 today to make sure it was not fixed before reporting it, and it has just happened again.

OS: Windows Vista Home
alt.binz version: 0.31.3 and earlier
Firewall: None.

Late addition: After waiting an hour for the latest occurence of this bug to pass, I remembered that it seemed to be fixed the last time, when last I unlocked the computer.  So I locked and unlocked the computer, and then alt.binz popped up the download complete notification.  So I have a workaround.

This certainly isn't nornal Alt.Binz behaviour, but I guess if you're saying this happens with all NZBs and not just splitted files (your post is unclear on this point) the problem is in the interaction of Alt.Binz and Windows tray/notifications on your system (does it happen if Alt.Binz is minimized to taskbar?).  I suggest switching off the ballon popups (Setup -> UI).  The lock/unlock is the equivalent of restarting explorer.exe, which tends to shift any tray problems, I find.

This happens everytime so far today with "splitted files", and occasionally with other NZBs.  I cannot give more precise information that that.  Perhaps the common factor is alt.binz inability to do the extraction, that seems most likely.  I will try the balloon popup change and see if that makes a difference.
