Files get stuck at ~95%
« on: December 03, 2009, 12:17:06 am »
Hi :)

My problem seems rather strange (at least to me...). When I import nzb files alt.binz (0.31.2) starts downloading them, however when they get close to completion (95 to 99%) they stop. Then my connections seem to time out. Big files load at full speed all the way to the end but then the same thing happens. This results in speed drops and many files that have to be repaired. At least I think it does but maybe the files where incomplete anyway.

I have tried this for old an new files and on my laptop with Windows XP aswell as on my PC (Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64). The problem exists everywhere. Now first i thought it's my usenet provider (eweka.nl), but I just tested it with grabit (v.172b4) and that worked like a charm! Full speed all the way through...

I coulnd't find anything in the log file that seemed helpfull, so here are a few lines from it:

I really hope someone has an idea, cause I like alt.binz and wouldn't want to change to another newsreader ;(

Setup->Connection->Article retry count is set to what ?

Also try playing with group select under server property

Retry count was set to 1. I put it to 3 now and I also checked the box for "select group".
The problem remains unfortunately.
All files run to 99% and it looks like the connection that is trying to "finish" the file gets stuck. After the timeout they reconnect and seem to download from a new file... that also runs nicely until at 99%. Sometimes they do get finished though, but I'm not able to see what causes it.
I wouldn't even mind it that much but all the hanging connections result in extremely poor speeds.

Better set the retry count to 0

setting into more than 0 means that alt.binz will try after X minutes to download the missing article until the number you set is reached.

Setting it to 0 will finish the file and if set up right, it will fix them with par files

Thx for the tip.

From what I tested so far I believe it to be a problem with my usenet provider at least to some extend. And other Readers like grabit seem to deal with it a little better (but in the long run do have some slowdowns aswell).
So I guss I'll monitor it, hope for the problem to vanish and contact Eweka if it doesn't.

May I ask how old the files are? As I know from experience with Eweka is that the older the articles (nearing their retention limit), the slower downloads get. And then you get files that stop at 99% for example. What fixed it for me was to disconnect the server, then reconnect. It will then usually finish the file.

It is frustrating, but I think relates to their retention. Although they claim to have up to X days, usually it depends on the group where you're downloading from whether that limit is reachable at all.

Global connection timeout is set to what? Maybe its low for Eweka and its delay when fetching older articles.

Nothing too old I think around 100-150 days maybe? But you are right, I also noticed that the older files are the slower it gets. But so far I had my overall speed drop not that weird stopping at 95-99%-thingy.

The connection timeout is set to 30 seconds. That shouldn't be too low I guess?

So far it seems to have gotten better (could have been a problem with some specific group, too. Unfortunately I didn't write down which was the problematic one.)
