Title: High CPU load when downloading with high speeds
Post by: pablorindt on November 09, 2008, 09:55:37 pm
Hey all,

I am using Alt.binz for a long time now, I have also written a tutorial for it on my own dutch download site. It's a great program, but now I have a problem. Since some time I have a fiber glass connection here. I can download now with 11 MB/s (megabyte per second). Yes, that's a lot and I like it. Problem is that if I do so Alt.binz is consuming a LOT of CPU. The load of Altbinz.exe is on 70%...

I disabled logging of files, but that doesn't seems to help. I think it has to do something with Alt.binz. It's not my PC, that is working perfectly (for sure!) and I have no virusses. Maybe it's a special firewall setting? I'm using the standard Vista firewall, and using Avira Antivir Premium. I hope someone can help me :)

Thanks in advance, I hope I can continue with using this little nice prog  ;D

There are a lot of threads already about this (Search button is at top of page).  For example:

Why do you think it's a bug?

I used the search, but that's not exactly my problem. I have a much better PC (3.2 GHz Dual core, 2 gig ram, all custom made). Also, Alt.binz doesn't hang. It's reacting a bit slow and using 70%, which is a lot. If it isn't Alt.binz, what else can it be?

It's no doubt the same issue.  Follow the instructions in that thread to find out for sure.  For example, lower your number of threads and/or download speed, watch for CPU spikes when decoding, etc.  Then play with the decoder & other thread settings as suggested by Rdl.  Also search the forum for the many posts about those settings.

If you think it's something else, try trouble-shooting in the usual way: switch off temporarily everything.

Ok I will do it when I have some time, and then post it here ;) Thx :)

Mmm I have looked into this and can't fix the problem. I have tried different combinations of prioritys. When I just download and not decode, CPU load is 10%, when decoding starts it moves up to 70%... Problem is that I download so fast (5 MB/s) that my PC can't handle this. Well, this seems.

I'm going to try newsleecher or SABnzbd+ and try out if they also have these loads ;)

This is a common problem with downloading at high speed on any PC , even dual core machines.
Even trying newsleecher you will still get the same results. This is not a bug in alt.binz , it's just the way it is.

@ 11 MByte/s, its only logical!

you have to consider that altbinz has to decode and merge the pieces for each file, which takes some cpu time.
you could try downloading slower, or buying one of these: http://www.top500.org/list/2008/06/100

Yes thanks for the replies, I will try some other things and maybe some do better. Thanks

You can however flatten the CPU spikes and improve overall performance by adjusting the decoder sleep cycles on the same setup page and combining this with thread priorities - again, instructions for this are in the forum someplace, I forget where.

I would say that 70% usage is pretty OK, if the priority is lowered it shouldn't interfere with much else on your machine.  Unless you're doing something CPU intensive, in which case lower your speed, or stop playing that game. :P

Here is the explanation by He Who Knows All:

Make of it what you will. ;)
