Long Term Bug - Random Freezing
« on: August 04, 2009, 04:05:41 pm »
Random freezing during the night, when minimised. No idea what the problem is, its not downloading, there is no access to the download icon. happens every 10 hours or so. Slightly worse if auto par, auto unrar. I would give more info if I could. I have to kill the process to continue.

XP SP3

Try running alt.binz exe if tray icon appears non responsive. Post results

OK, well nothing much happens, I can launch a new AltBinz but it does not open any window, it remains, like the previous one, a dead process... new one is about 6 meg, while the old one is about 200+ meg in memory.

Lets try from basics then. Put exe into new dir. Start it with clean config and just setup basics (server, download path) and post results.

It doesn't hurt to start with empty queue.

OK, same problem, took a few days, 3 hours into download, sometimes it can happen 5 minutes after download starts or not at all that night. I just wish there was something I could do to recreate the problem reliably.

It's not just you, fyi.  This happens to me every so often as well.  Just had to kill the process on mine and restart.  I can't find a cause, either.

i used to have this issue with with my XP install but i haven't had it since i installed from scratch with Windows 7.  The only thing that remains an issue from my XP install is the PAR2 tab loosing functionality out of the blue.

I used to have something similar to this (or maybe the same, can't really make it out from your description) on Windows Vista. I didn't have to kill the process but the tray icon would stop responding. My 'fix' is what Rdl suggested, running the .exe again to show the alt.binz window. It's been a while but I remember posting about it on here. It was completely random and eventually stopped by itself. I haven't had the problem since.

OK after some experimenting, I have figured out if I use multiple download threads it gets a LOT worse, if I stick to one, I don't get the freezing. A threading issue?

This is not ideal for me as I need to use multiple threads to max out my bandwidth but at least I can stop the random freezing.

Could you reproduce alt.binz freezing but without minimizing to tray at all?

If it's happening consistently at night, perhaps it might help to check the Windows Event Viewer logs to see if any process is running overnight that may be interfering with At.Binz.

Nope, always minimised I think...?
