Two new problems w/Alt.binz 0.28.5 on Linux /Wine
« on: March 19, 2009, 03:13:16 pm »
recently installed ver 0.28.5 on machine running Fedora Core 7/Wine ver 1.0-rc3 and noticed that the minimize button in the upper right doesn't function.  However, you can minimize to the tray(w/ To tray button) but, when you click on the tray icon the app shows up on the desktop as the smallest size window possible.  You have to manually drag it back to the previous size.  In the previous version of alt.binz if you hit the minimize button in the upper right corner of the app, the app would minimize properly.  Or if you sent it to the tray using the "to tray" button then clicked on the tray icon the app would be restored to it's  previous size.  I see identical behavior on another machine running Kubuntu 8.10/Wine 1.0.1 with this latest version of Alt.binz.

Can't confirm this for an EeePC running ubuntu (Eeebuntu 2.0) and Wine (1.0.1). Minimizing works fine and so does restoring the window with 0.28.5 on this configuration, except the GUI being pretty slow; but I blame this on the Eee's hardware and as this is the first (and so  far) only program I have run under Wine I cannot compare this to normal behaviour - but then, the GUI is even under XP ... let's call it different.

However when minimizing to tray, while the taskbar is hidden, the program is gone from the GUI (but running in the background). As being new to Linux I have to find out of how to bring it back into the UI (I killed the task and restartet, seemed to be the easiest way, even that I don't like that).

I remember seeing the issues you two are describing with older Wine versions.   It hasn't been a problem for me (on Gentoo x86_64, KDE 3.5.10) since at least Wine 1.1.7 (and I believe a few earlier than that).  However,  there is an outstanding bug in Wine's new heap-management (since Wine 1.1.8) which leaks RAM at a rate equal to the download speed: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16178

I believe there is a new problem in alt.binz v.0.28.5 involving PAR2 repairs,  with which I have never had a prior issue.  Every repair has failed since I upgraded to v0.28.5.

Unfortunately,  even with 'detailed logging' enabled there is a dearth of information as to what the problem might be:
Code: [Select]
[30/03/2009 17:04:10] [Dec] Yenc file The Big Picture.vol007+008.PAR2 decoded in 210ms
[30/03/2009 17:04:10] [PAR2&Unrar] Repairing the big picture.par2
[30/03/2009 17:04:10] [PAR2&Unrar] "z:\download\the big picture.par2" Par2 repair started
[30/03/2009 17:04:10] [PAR2&Unrar] "z:\download\the big picture.par2" Par2 repair failed
[30/03/2009 17:04:10] [PAR2&Unrar]
Downloading extra blocks manually then triggering the repair again doesn't help.

Running the repair manually from the CLI works fine using par2cmdline 0.4,   after which alt.binz is happy to un-rar it.

Repairing is par2.exe job, nothing to do with alt.binz. And par2.exe in alt.binz wasn't changed in ages...

Stavros, RDL,

This apparently isn't an issue with Wine since altbinz 0.28.4 worked ok.  The problem occurred when I changed to 0.28.5.  I'm currently back to using 0.28.4 to avoid this problem.  Apparently, something was changed from 0.28.4 to 0.28.5.

OK,  yes after testing some more I can confirm this.  The 'minimise to tray' setting must be disabled,  and I have to minimise/restore twice to trigger it (the first time works perfectly,  the 2nd hangs the GUI).

My own problem with PAR2 repairs has mysteriously resolved itself,  for the moment at least.
