Option to delete NZBs from DL-Queue and hdd

Hey there,
first of all, great, great program...my favorite!

I'd like to have an additional option in the context menu of an NZB in the download queue (i.e. the menu that opens when you right-click on an entry) to not only delete the NZB from the download-queue, but also from the Harddrive.

I think this would be a handy feature, because then you don't have to open the dl-dir and delete the NZB manually.

This idea makes sense. I suspect that most users would probably want to always delete the NZB if they decide to cancel the download, so one option might be to simply delete everything associated with the file; queue list, temp files, and NZB. (Then NZBs would be saved only for files that actually get  downloaded.)

Might many people want to keep the NZB but cancel the download?

If so, another option might be to have a sidebar menu pop out when "delete" is hit, which might then give choices such as:

• "remove this item from queue"
• "remove from queue AND delete temp files"
• "remove from queue AND delete temp files AND delete NZB"

Why not simply go to NZB Options and tick 'Delete NZB after importing'? That's what I did, and now I never have to delete NZBs.

Hmm, you're right, I never thought about using that option, but I've got one question: Let's say, I import a NZB, it is deleted then, and later I quit alt.binz and the NZB is not finished yet...does alt.binz then save the NBZ again, so I can continue downloading later?

Hope you understood my problem...I don't want to lose the NZB if the download isn't finished.

Auto-saving the download queue is a standard feature of all good newsreaders, and alt.binz is one of them.

Unfinished items remain in the download queue until they are complete, even if you quit program or have requested the NZB to be deleted after importing. When you reload the program any unfinished  downloads will resume automatically as soon as you reconnect to your news server.

I want to save the NZBs of my downloads - I just don't want to save the NZBs of files that I cancel download.I think that NZBs of files that complete downloading should be saved, since this might encourage people to upload their verified NZBs onto other sites.

I think the bigger issue here is not saving NZBs of files that were cancelled and never downloaded. For instance, if I want to just view NFO files (to help me decide which release to download), I must add the entire collection to the queue, expand it, then unpause the NFO and download just the NFO.

Doing so leaves me with a folder full of NZBs for files that I cancelled after reading the NFO.  Then I must go to the NZB folder and manually delete all the NZBs of releases that I have never downloaded, just so that my NZB folder will be left  containing only the NZBs that I actually downloaded.


Duplicate queue entries: One potential problem with auto-deleting NZBs when download is cancelled is that because the same NZB can be loaded multiple times (another possible "bug") that If I am only deleting the duplicates from the queue, I will not want to auto-delete the original NZB.

I can solve your nfo problem at least: search for releases on www.nfoogle.com - you can view the nfos in your browser, or download them if you want from there.  Much easier and quicker.

Actually, it would be quite handy to have an nfoogle tab in alt.binz for this purpose ...

Big Thanks for explaining that...I'll just use the 'Delete NZB after importing' option...it works well for me!

Nevertheless, if the feature I requested above is easy to implement, I would appreciate implementing it very much!

Easiest way I can of to add NFO support to alt.binz is to include support for the search engine USENET Live!. It's a fully featured usenet search engine with a specific NFO search function. NFOs are displayed in the browser window so there is no need to download an NZB to view the NFO. Should be very easy to implement in alt.binz. I think it's better than nfoogle as it's fully automated and has binaries as well as NFOs.

NFOogle is a nice site, but not very useful for newsgroup downloaders, since most of the NFOs in its database are for files that are not available on Usenet.

However,  I can just go to Binsearch or Yabse or  Aeton [ http://70.86.154.13/ ] websites and view the NFOs online (as well as generating the NZBs) but doing that kind of defeats the whole purpose of using Alt.Binz's hypersearch features

But that might certainly be a desirable feature for Alt-Binz to tie-into any online NFO database, if something like that would be easier to code than adding a NFO viewer to AltBinz that actually downloads the NFO through Usenet.

EDIT: thanks meltcity. Usenetlive is another search site that includes online NFO viewer. (I forgot about them after they disabled NZBs) but I think that maybe the easiest site to add NFO viewing for would be through Binsearch, since it's already part of Alt.Binz's search already; but the NFO-viewing feature available on the Binsearch website is not (yet) supported in Alt.Binz.

Not sure what you mean by this.  NFOogle just indexes some of the most reliable scene release db sites - only the occasional proper or internal hasn't found it's way into the newsgroups yet, but that's what req'ing is for.  Binsearch is obviously an alternative, but it's not always possible to view the nfos with it.  For instance, searching for BSG s03e18 on Binsearch requires downloading the NZb to get the nfo, whereas NFOogle produces not only an online nfo, but also the information that it has been nuked due to bad audio, so therefore is likely to be propered by another group soon.  So now you know it's not worth downloading it yet.

It's a matter of what information you want/need at the end of the day I suppose.  Everyone will have their own favourite sources.  The intrusive prOn advertising on Usenetlive kills that one for me.

Added NFO support for Newzleech & Binsearch. Yabse as far as I can see doesn't have nfo support.

Rdl, you continue to impress! The NFO support works very well and makes the search function even more useable.

A further innovation would be the ability to create a NZB from more than one item in the search results. It's quite common for PARs and RARs to be listed in separate collections on search engines such as BinSearch and Newzleech. On the web browser you can put a tick next to each item and a single NZB will be created, but I don't think this is possible in alt.binz.

Yes, it is.  Just select as many as you want and add them to the queue as one item, this will create the NZB for you.
