Title: Windows 7 Taskbar Extensions
Post by: karn on May 06, 2009, 11:17:25 pm
I know i know - its not even out yet. If you haven't tried it yet RDL - do so.  This is more of a "when possible in the future" request but it would be nice if alt.binz supported the new windows 7 taskbar features like using the progressbar (possibly to show overal progress - current progress - current speed). amongst other features (read more here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378460(VS.85).aspx)

Then he should start with moving the speedbar from the tray icon to the taskbar (window) icon because we all will pin the AltBinz shortcut on the taskbar. ;)
So we dont need the tray icon anymore.
(I like these new Win7 taskbar features)

Personally I prefer my AB on the system tray, but the extensions to the W7 taskbar would be welcome!

Happily, someone already made a start on some controls for Jump Lists, Overlay Icon, Progress Indicator and Taskbar Thumbnails - Delphi 7 through 2009, will fail silently on non-Windows 7 systems:

ImgBurn already has a progress bar incorporated into windows 7 taskbar, but no jump lists for now.I wonder what code did they use.

ImgBurn = C++ builder

Alt.Binz = Delphi 7

Lots of +1, but not so many discussions on what extension should be added and for what.

Lets say progressbar. What should it display? Whole queue or current nzb or unrar or par2 progress?

If it is possible, show the same in the icon as in the system tray (green/orange/purple). For most programs I dont use the system tray anymore because I already have a (pinned) icon on the taskbar. Since they are small (with default taskbar settings), the taskbar can show lots of icons.

And for the context menu/jump list, well...because I disabled the system tray icon (yes it says I ;)), move/copy the options to the jump list.

When copying files with explorer or downloading files with Internet Explorer, the explorer icon shows a progress bar. Do you think you can use that system for showing the download speed? Like the vertical bar in the current system tray icon. Maybe others want to see the par/unrar progress but I care more about the download speed.

I'm using windows 7. If you're also using it, go to Settings -> User Interface and turn off 'Minimize to Tray' (1/2 way down). That'll keep it in the dock, rather than in the system tray. unfortunately the icon doesn't change colour or provide speed there though.

Agree with :
- show the same in the icon as in the system tray (green/orange/purple)
- context menu/jump list, move/copy the options to the jump list.
- progress bar (whole queue) and / or showing the download speed

I second that, maybe an option to detect if the OS is Win7 and then "minimize to tray" minimizes to win7 dock. but for the icon, I'd say an option to choose what it shows (speed, progress, ...) and of course the colours for par2 and unrar.

Sounds great guys, that's exactly what I was thinking. It may not be a walk in the park to make all of this happen though...

Let's keep all of this configurable from within Alt.Binz. I've been on Win7 since the official beta but I still prefer to have stuff like Alt.Binz placed in the system tray. I only use the 'Pin to taskbar' for applications that I use all the time (like Firefox). That's mainly because I have my taskbar set to showing not just the icons but also the labels.

About the icon taskbar: a cosmetic request if easy to do (I suppose it is) especially if Altbinz stands in the taskbar all the time which is more common with 7 :
please improve its appearance, right now it is well ... improvable :)

Now what could we need if support is implemented for 7 thumbnail?
for instance I would hover the taskbar to check current file and overall download progress status: % and ETA? and maybe "Pause" "Resume", actually something similar than a mediaplayer, like this:

Any other ideas?  ;D

Taskbar button is fine over here. No big pixels.

Maybe some inspiration from http://code.google.com/p/win7shell/.

Yup you are right, just quite Altbinz and restarted it and it looks fine now.
--- edit ---
noooo back to pixelized icon :( ... maybe minimizing or maximizing doesnt update the icon properly?
weird

And yes for the Winamp 7 taskbar extension, I use it also for winamp and this for Foobar:
http://wintense.com/plugins/foo_w7shell

Altbinz taskbar icon could also add stuff like the following with right-clic:
with preferences, ...

Unrar and repair why not but what about adding overall download progress? ;)

Exactly what I thought. Will try it ASAP. Not sure how to do it for downloading (current nzb or whole queue, will it be confusing when switching to repair/unrar)
Title: Re: Windows 7 Taskbar Extensions
Post by: domdom on March 10, 2010, 09:34:57 pm
The reason I suggested "whole queue" is that repair and unrar is quite fast to display so most of the time not really visible, but overall d/l could take much more time and "whole queue" would allow monitoring progress!
As far as switching from one state to another, why not following the same behaviour as the tray icon:
green icon with overall progress then whenever necessary, switch over to amber then purple!
Title: Re: Windows 7 Taskbar Extensions
Post by: Chuckle123 on March 10, 2010, 09:44:13 pm
I agree, what to monitor in the display can be awkward.  I like the idea of different colors for different tasks.  Only thing I see is many may have it set to not pause d/l when unrar and paring.  You could have Par and Rar as higher priority so if those tasks are taking place the progress bar would reflect those tasks.  Once they complete and d/l is the only active task then display the d/l progress.  This mechanism would work no matter if d/l pauses to par and unrar or not.

Display Priority; lower the number the higher the priority and that status is displayed
0 - Rar
1 - Par
2 - D/L

yeah that what i meant. as for the display of the download why not have an option to choose either whole queue or current nzb acording to personal preference. if thats not possible i would go for current nzb since the progress of the "whole queue" can be to some extent be monitored by looking at the ETA that's displayed...

judging by the size of the taskbar extention it could also be used to display other states or settings via miniature icons, for example a mini pause-button if paused or a mini shutdown-button if shutdown is enabled...

Thanks for the "small" improvements in 0.31.5 ;) I have to mention (in a friendly manner) that I still miss "whole queue" progress indicator in the taskbar icon: Altbinz is almost always minimzed and that would allow verifying quickly where the whole download is, without maximizing Altbinz window maybe for the next version?
the same way you handle unraring would be great (e.g. this is how Teracopy display copy operation for instance)
Anyway thanks for keeping this wonderful proggie updated! we all do appreciate!

the problem could be that ther are only 3 colours red yellow green. as of now yellow for unrar and repair and now green is used for the copy progress of the internal explorer so only there is only red left...

i've got altbinz pinned down on the taskbar and whenever i copy something with the integrated explorer i get something like this.

(http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/5985/63433056.jpg) (http://img401.imageshack.us/i/63433056.jpg/)

i don't know if the screenshot shows it clearly enough, but there are two windows but since they are stacked on top of each other the progress of the second is shown on the one in front.

Edith: just noticed when Alt.Binz is pinned to the taskbar all the mini-icons show the way they should but the main icon always stays green, when unpinned from taskbar the main icon changes color aswell

Use the icons to distinguish the current task and try to use green as the only colour. Yellow is ok, but Red is the "oops, something went wrong/achtung" colour. :)

And shortcuts to pause/unpause when right clicking on it ;)
Connect/disconnect
Pause/unpause
Pause for x minutes (probably not possible with that "x")
Open download folder
Open unrar folder

(the common actions)

also whenever the status icon is changed (for example by pausing, limiting bandwdith or enabling scheduler) the main icon will stay green again during unrar and repair. this can be changed again by pinning and unpinning it from the taskbar.

having the overall progress bar being displayed on the taskbar would be great. For me, that's the only thing missing.
