Title: altbinz installer!
Post by: alien13 on February 17, 2007, 09:13:05 am
Hey, I just downloaded your program and its really nice.
I thought that making an installer would make it easy for new users.

What this does is puts all the files under "altbinZ" in program files, adds a shortcut to the desktop and adds a folder to the start menu.

I made this really quick with Click team Install Creator. It only took about 2mins so it's not the best but it gets the job done.

you can get the installer here (http://www.alien13.jumbahost.com/altbinz%20setup.exe).

If you prefer just the zip file thats fine, this is just a suggestion =)

Well, if the devs are going to release an installer version, I hope it will be made using NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System).

alien13, you should really check it out: http://nsis.sourceforge.net/

I wouldn't be surprised if, in the near future, alt.binz were added to NSIS Famous Users (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Users) list. :D

Inno Setup would also be a good installer..

Ok, I have made a new installer using NSIS which you can get here (http://www.alien13.jumbahost.com/alt.binZ%20setups/Setup.exe).

Do the creators of alt.binZ have a license agreement? If so would they be able to send it to me in a PM or something so I can put it into the installer.

@Mystic2010 - I will have a look at Inno Setup later on today. For now I have to do a few things to my program, and do some english homework =(

One thing of alt.binz I really like that it DOESN´T have an installer.
Most Installers copy files into many directories, in the registry e.t.c.

So please if you someday decide to "make it easy" with an installer, keep just the plain zip-archive as an alternative!

One good example is uTorrent.
They have a Standalone and an Installer version.

For the computer savvy people it's a no brainer: we prefer standalone versions because, like bugmenot said, they don't install all over the computer (system folder, registry, program files folder, etc.).
Hell, I wished ALL apps were standalone instead of installer crap that fools around with system files and registry entries.

But most other people (the non-computer savvy) are used to installers that do everything for them, by simply double-clicking an .exe file. Some of these people don't even know that programs can run without being installed at all...

If they come across a .rar file, they will probably think: "What do I do with this? How do I install the program?".
Or even better: "How do I UNinstall? I can't see it in my 'Add/Remove Programs' panel!"
(BTW, I think it should be .zip instead of .rar because Windows XP can natively open .zip files. Unless you want to keep the super-newbies away!)

These are the people for which an installer is useful and needed.

But then again, if they don't know what a standalone app is, and how it works, they probably won't be into Usenet, binaries and alt.binz.

Good points about zip/rar crypto :) I'll switch to zip then. Also I don't see a problem making 2 versions - zip one and installer one

new version should come in two flavours : .ZIP / .EXE ( installer )
