Altbinz vs Newsleecher
« on: November 21, 2007, 02:32:53 pm »
For anyone that's new to newsgroups or just looking for a good app to manage NZBs, I'd take a hard look at Altbinz first.

I've been using Newsleecher for almost 2 years and like it, but wasn't thrilled about being charged for supersearch and upgrading every year.  I understand the pricing and support model, but it leaves some feeling left out in the cold a bit.

I prefer the pay once, upgrade forever method w Forum help support as well as developer chime ins on occasion.

Anyway, Altbinz, to me looks even better and FREE! ... After I run it through the mill for a few weeks, I'll donate a few bucks.

The search features alone clinch it for me ... all the other features I want are there ... Auto Unrar etc ...

Nice job

yeah and the new versions are even better nzbplay works just fine much more ways to adjust the programm and for multi monitors the ability to undock the different tabs... but be advised to not donate to little since paypal-fees are to be considered and if it seems way to small there are no second chances... there have been threads of people who donated 1 or 2 $ and beeing refused with no further tries...

I would have to agree with David. If you do contribute, make sure you donate what the program is worth to YOU. I personally feel a great shareware program that I use on a daily basis is well worth $35 to $50. But that is just me.

If you like the program, use it on a daily basis and contribute $1 or $2, that is like slapping the developer in the face.

So like David said, choose your contribution wisely, grasshopper  :D

I have also been a long time user of Newsleecher but discovered this little gem recently. After half an hour of testing alt.binz I promptly donated a gazillion dollars (that's what was currently still in my Paypal account) but seeing the frequent updates and the fine support I am sure I will donate more in the future.

Edit: let's not get into that game.

I originally tried using this because I couldn't get another program I had bought to run in Linux.  I followed a post in another forum to here stating that this program would run full-featured under Wine in Linux.  I felt that with all the features along with being able to use it with Wine (with no modifications) and Windows warranted a good donation.  I consider it just that too, a donation.  I like and use the program enough that if it went from free to a pay application, I would buy it and not think twice about spending the money.

I don't agree entirely. Don't forget that not everybody lives in rich countries in Europe of the USA. These guys would also like to donate something to show their appreciation, but if they make 100$ a month they just can't.

i get the point, but if they only make 100 $ i would guess they can't afforde even 5 $ for a usenet-account not to talk about a computer and internet access and if they can well then they just save the cost for their usenet acount some time to have a better tool to use it.

i dunno, i donated what i can afford which is a gazillion euro... dunno, think thats about a trillion dollars...

and assuming bugs im finding at the moment are tweaked and fixed in the future ill donate agian in a few months, but im not gonna donate a fat amount of money for an incomplete program. i'd much rather donate every few months keeping the developer improving the program to carry on getting my money...

and you can blame newsleecher for this cuz i paid a fat yearly sum for that and its just gone down hill ever since...

[Edit: the point is well made, but let's not talk filthy lucre, please. -Hecks]
