Binsearch...
« on: November 24, 2010, 04:36:30 am »
I've used Binsearch..and today on the response list, this is what came up on the first line:

"Binsearch may only be used for personal use. Commercial use, in any shape or form, is strictly prohibited." Yes, this means integrating our service in 3rd-party programs is not allowed either. People should not be made to pay money for search results we provide for free -"

Well, strictly speaking Alt.Binz isn't a commercial program (donations grant Contributor status), and the reason Binsearch doesn't work in 0.25.0 is because of changes Binsearch made to the site. Nobody is being made to pay anything (the site itself can still be used via browser with 0.25.0 w/o probs), and Binsearch is only one component of Alt.Binz, not its main purpose for being.

That said, the blanket ban on integration in 3rd-party programs seems odd.  I don't see how that follows automatically from their statement regarding non-commercial use, and results are in any case still being displayed ...

I'm worried that this is just a warning now, and later they will stop returning results. I hope they will come up with a more flexible policy than currently stated.

That is true, Alt.Binz isn't commercially purchased or even advertised. I'm not even sure how I came to know this software. Probably a forum somewhere. I'm like everyone else and just hope search providers don't become corporate driven and start wanting big bucks. Binsearch just searches the most popular groups anyway, right? Is there a search that searches more or all of the groups? When using the search button in Alt.Binz is that a blanket search using which provider?

Binsearch has both a 'Popular' and 'Other' groups list, you can choose either. The Global Search button allows you to toggle which engines you want to query (results will appear on their tabs).
