Trying to use Verizon
« on: June 11, 2008, 10:44:55 pm »
I have been using Altbinz 0.25 for a while with usenet-news and roadrunner with no issues. I recently added a verizon dsl account and free usenet access comes with it. I am able to log in with my username and password via outlook express, but not with altbinz. Anybody have experience with using Verizon with Altbinz?

I am using news.verizon.net as the server. For my username I have tried it with and without the @verizon.net (should not be required) and of course putting in my password. Port is 119 and for now trying 1 connection, but it does not connect. I just get the following in the log...

[6/11/2008 4:03:30 PM] [T1] Hello
[6/11/2008 4:03:30 PM] [T1] Connecting (Verizon)
[6/11/2008 4:03:51 PM] [T1] Could not connect (Verizon)

Thanks for any help

That article does not say that Verizon will cease all of usenet, but it doesn't matter for the moment because in my post I am saying that I was able to get in via outlook express so they are allowing access.

They're not stopping all usenet but they are dropping the whole alt.* hierarchy. So Alt.Binz won't help you on Verizon.

As an aside, I'm not sure when exactly they are closing off the alt.* groups, and you should still be able to login from Alt.Binz. Time Warner Cable is ceasing from June 23rd (bastards!).

Well either way I am unable to log in using altbinz, but able to with outlook express. So again looking for thoughts on what I am doing wrong with altbinz?

'Log in' is a bit unclear here.  In Outlook, are you able to log in AND download headers for e.g. alt.binaries.multimedia?

Yes, I am able to see all newsgroups available and see all headers. With Altbinz it will not connect with the same exact address (news.verizon.net) and same username and password.

As a last stab before giving up on it as a hopeless case: try toggling 'Select Group' and/or 'Article Cmd' in Setup > Servers (remember to click Apply and disconnect/reconnect), or try different ports, or re-enter server, username and password making sure you don't accidentally add a space before any of them.

I have tried all combinations with Select Group and/or Article Cmd. I have also disconnected and reconnected after each change and still no luck. I have no idea what other ports to try though. How could I find that out. Are you on Verizon? Is there anyone out here on Verizon?

Thanks

Well I figured it out. Apparantly you have to be on the Verizon line. My Verizon acct is at my office, but I was using it at my home. Kind of strange that you have to be on a Verizon line when they are forcing you to use a username and password. Kind of stinks because I would like to be able to use it at home. The other thing that is weird is that I was able to get in via Outlook on a Time Warner line. Any way around this?

It really is time that you started looking somewhere else for answers to your questions, methinks.
