Alt.binz won't connect to news server (whs 2011)
« on: November 16, 2011, 07:13:23 pm »
I have been running AB on a windows home server for many years. First whs 2003, and for almost a year now whs 2011. I never had any issues. Suddenly AB won't connect to my my news server. I can successfully  connected to the news server via other computers running W7 on the same network. I then tried turning of the firewall on whs 2011, and also tried making firewall rules. Makes no difference. Was running AB 0.25. Uninstalled that, then reinsstalled the latest version downloaded from here. Nothing helps! AB says connecting for 30 seconds, then could not connect, retry in 10 sec.

I know it's a whs 2011 issue, but what can it be?

To debug, start by trying to telnet from a console to the usenet server (non-SSL port) to see if you can at least get to the authentication prompts.

Also, try to trace back to where "suddenly" actually started. Something on your system must have changed ...

Just open a command prompt/powershell and type:

Code: [Select]
telnet your.usenet.server 119

You should get a 200 response code in return.

This was very strange. Before i got to telnet, I tried tracert from the command line window. No problem reaching the server. Then it hit me. There was no problems logging in to the search engine with my forum nic and pass. Had a look at my server login credentials again. There it was. Two extra letters were added on to my server address.

How can this error have not been deleted when I uninstalled AB 0.25? Is it a file init file or something that hasn't been deleted? I can't get my head around this one?
