Altbin through Squid Proxy server (no connection)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My altbin doesn't want to connect to the news server through my squid proxy server.
I have allowed the port 119 as a safe or allowed ports in my ACL's.

Squid is for http proxying only, afaik, although apparently you can set it up to tunnel secure NNTP connections with the CONNECT method, i.e. to SSL servers on ports 443, 563 etc.
