Binsearch Does Not List All Groups
« on: October 18, 2007, 01:54:40 am »
I'm using alt.binz v0.26.0 and when I click the drop-down box in the Binsearch tab so I can select a group to search within the list stops around a.e.b or so.

Considering my news server gives me about 100,000 newsgroups I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg.. it doesn't seem like Alt.binz is either getting the full list from the server or the list is too large to fit in that drop-down. Anyone have a solution so I can see my entire group list?

I assume you mean 0.25.0? ;)

If you must use Binsearch (Newzleech is better :)) then replace the bsglist2.abz file in your Altbinz/misc folder with the complete version:

Browse these groups by choosing 'Others'.  Normal searching should work fine without, though.

I am using 24.2. When I click on the groups button in Newsleech I get "all groups", but no others. I did select a few fav groups in the group list (but this is only for Xpat, right?)

So how do I get choice in Newsleech?

Also, is group browsing something that will be added in a later version? I'm currently using Xnews, happy with the many filter features and stuff, but it's a real buggy program. Newsleecher and Grabit were advised to me as replacements but I found them either bloated and still not offering the features I want, or too thin. Both are not what I'm looking for

With Newzleech, you need to have run a search first, then the group list will be fetched.  That's just how the site works, unfortunately.  The Browse button works fine after that.

The Newsgroups tab is for XPat searching only, although version 0.25.5 has favourites lists for Binsearch and Aeton.  You need to be a contributor to access versions above 0.25.0 though (which is the last public 'free' version).  Read the message on the front page:

KuroNeko,

Just click 1 time on the Search button in NewzLeech tab and you'll have your groups.
Same for NZBIndex and Yabse.
You can browse the groups of your choice then.

Xnews isn't a buggy program, i'm using it for many years, maybe you can't handle it..

Thanks Gompy, got Newsleech to work.

As for Xnews, it's widely known it has serious issues. It has bad memory leaks and can no longer handle groups like alt.binaries.movies.divx, as presented by Giganews. There's so much retention, the amount of needed memory exceeds the powers of Xnews. It's simply outdated and no longer updated.

Sofar, Altbinz really looks good so I hope it will continue to grow and add browsing of groups, so I don't need other clients anymore.

I read the message. It's not clear however, how much should one donate and for how long will this buy you updates?

1) A reasonable amount, "whatever the program is worth to you".  The dev, Rdl, naturally reserves the right to refund your donation if the amount is derisory.  You just need to apply a bit of common sense to this.

2) Lifetime upgrades.

OK, thanks. Would 20 Euro be sufficient or derisory? Is Rdl European or American (payment in US$ or Euro)?

Payment is in Euros by default, and 20 euro would be fine, I'm sure.  :)  By 'derisory' I mean the jokers who have been offering 1 or 2 euro and expecting lifetime upgrades in return.
