SSL connection troubles.
« on: November 17, 2007, 02:02:27 pm »
 ??? ???

I have been using Alt.Binz 0.24.2, connection through the SSL server on usenet-news.net with no trouble.

I use Verizon DSL and have recently added a router, and now it is almost impossible to get connected to the SSL server. MAYBE after 5 minutes I get 1 out of 4 connections. Maybe.

The rest (or all of them) just sit there saying "Can't connect" and the re-try timer.

I have set the Linksys WRT54G router to forward port #563 to my PC. No help.

For the regular connection I have NO port forwarding, and it works fine.

Can you give me any advice? I'd really rather use the SSL to keep Verizon out of some of my business.

First of all, I'd recommend upgrading to 0.25.0, which is the latest free version.

Secondly, for trouble-shooting purposes I'd suggest temporarily switching off your router's firewall.  If Alt.Binz works fine then, you'll at least have identified the source of the problem; if it doesn't, we need to have a further think.

Thirdly, try pinging the secure server from the command prompt to see if you're getting any response at all over your network.

You don't have to forward port 563. It is the target port at the server. Of course you have to open the outgoing 563 port, if closed. When you get a connection, does it download anything. Are you sure your usenet server does provide an option to connect via SSL?

Yeh, as I said SSL has been working fine up till now. I'll look into the router firewall, I assumed forwarding the port was enough.

HalOfBorg <--- VERY low amount of router knowledge.

And I'll check into the newer version.

---- Update ----

Just read email from Usenet-News, maybe problem not on my end.

Update: Hello,
I'm sorry but we still have issues with the ssl servers.
We have added more servers but apparently not enough.
The technicians are working on a solution for the weekend and next week the hardware will continue to be upgraded.
Meanwhile you can try to switch between the available ports. 443, 563 and 8080.
You can follow the status at this page.
