Hi, I have a newsdemon account and am useing newsrover at the moment, but have been told to ditch it and use alt.binz. I have installed alt.binz and followed all the installation and config guides but I can't get alt.binz to connect?? I would be gratefull if any one has any idea what I coulbe doing wrong

Well, we'll need more info than that. What does your Log report, for a start? What's the server address? What do you see in the Connection panel (press F9)? Have you tried re-entering username & password (and click Apply)?

I have tried all 4 of ther server addresses,
This is the 1 that is in at the moment:
europe-ssl.newsdemon.com I have also opened all the ports ,443, 119,and 8080, hope this helps.

Hmm, no authentication errors there, so it seems to be a connection problem only. Alt.Binz is allowed through your firewall? Try 563 as well, and try non-SSL server on 119. If the latter works but not SSL, you need to email newdemon support about it. Also you could try to make sure you can actually connect:
tracert europe-ssl.newsdemon.com
or
ping europe-ssl.newsdemon.com
or
telnet news.newsdemon.com 119
-
Still can't connect useing 119, have pinged europe-ssl.newsdemon.com useing pcpitstop.com and the result came back all green (less than 200ms) I really am dumfounded with this.
-
Remember 119 is for non-SSL servers only, make sure SSL option is toggled off, and click Apply.
If you're certain that Alt.Binz is allowed through your firewall (turn it off temporarily to be sure, software & hardware) then I'm afraid you need to take this up with Newsdemon support. It's 99% certain that Alt.binz itself has nothing to do with it.
While you're at it, why not try also from commandline (with no spaces at end of lines):
telnet news.newsdemon.com 119
AUTHINFO USER <yourusername>
AUTHINFO PASS <yourpassword>
GROUP alt.binaries.multimedia
That's basically what Alt.Binz does ... if it doesn't work, then that port is blocked somewhere on your network, and that's your problem.
-
thanks for your help, I'm sorry but I don,t know how to do the comandline thing??
-
Start button > Run > cmd.exe
Then just type those lines.
-
Thanks not sure if i typed it in correctly but the message i get is that the file is not found ??
-
Thanks for your help, just to let you know i have it working now, it looks like newsrover had left a cookie/hidden file, preventing other newsreaders working??, thats all i found.
-
OK, thanks for letting us know ... whatever it was ... ;)
