fii in server (( backup server ))
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:52:38 am »
hello

i am trying out altbinz .25(( last public release ))

my current news server is giving me a lot of missing blocks ... it has all the files that are needed except they are always missing blocks.(( this is a new occurence as it has been workin fine for a while now ))

so i got an second usenet account to set up as my backup (( fill in server )) to my primary

Server A (( primary))
    |
     ------Server B (( backup ))

Now i am assuming that when i am downloading from primary and when it comes accross a file that it downloads and it is missing some blocks the backup will kick in to get the missing blocks (( assuming that backup server has these blocks and that they are there in the first place .. not a bad upload with missing blocks ))

in reality it is still the same as if i had only a primary server , it is still downloading a lot of files with missing blocks and then when download is finished there is still too many blocks missing for even pars to recover nothing happens there is no sign of the backup server.

so my question is how does backup server meant to work .. does it work in real time to monitor primary server and when missing blocks occurs it kicks in to see if it can get these missing blocks, also in my main window i see my primary connections but i do not see backup connections anywhere - is there somewhere in altbinz letting me know that my backup server is ready and waiting (( i know that it works because i can set it up as a primary and then i get all connections from both primaries on my main window , but to me this is no good as i got this second account as block account that never expires just for fill ins og missing blocks ))

any help would be appreciated

ps by the way i read thru the forums found these threads but still i cannot get backup ( fill in ) server just to fill in missing blocks

If an article is not found on the primary server, Alt.Binz wil then check the backup server for it.  You can see this live by watching the Connections panel (press F9), or by reading your (detailed) log.  Your log will have recorded all action taken by Alt.Binz, so the first thing to do before we go any further is to check your log and report back.  That will help to narrow down the problem.

i had a friend who didn't want to use backup because he was afraid the back up would kick in to early (his primary somtimes needs some trys to get connected), so i watched my log when it used my backup. i came to the conclusion, that the back up server only come into play if primary gives the feedback error 404 article not found on server, thus it quite normal that your backup doesn't do anything. what you seem to want is that the backup doesn't fill in missing files but fill in missing fileparts. i don't know if what u want is feasable, but it would seem to be something that needs to be requested and maybe added in a version 0.27.1 or higher.

Yes this is exactly what i am asking for... thank you for putting it more eloquent and precise words for me (( i am new to all usenet lingo ))

i see many advantages in backup server not just fill in missing files but fill in missing fileparts.... maybe the backup server can monitor in the primary in real time and then fill in missing file parts in real time , just like anti virus monitors computer operation in real time .

as requests can only be made by donators and if you think that this is a valid request can someone please request this.

Thank you both for your replies , they were a big help and now i know that it was not possible what i was trying to do, not yet anyway since i am hopin it can be done after request.

But this is exactly what Alt.Binz already does ... articles = "fileparts" in the sense that you mean it.  On the PAR2 tab, the term 'blocks' is used.  Read your log, and you should see Alt.Binz downloading parts of a file - e.g. 'Article started 1/40 my1337file.rar' - and if one of those parts is missing, it will check your backup server for it when the next thread is available, i.e. as close to "real time" as Alt.Binz gets.

thanks ...

i checked the log as you said and it is as u say.(( the ones that are saved to my altbinz logs directory ))

i have been watching logs (( live logs in the main inerface window ))and i think i now know my problem ... i am seeing this a lot in the Log window of main interface

[12/01/2008 2:51:06 PM] [Dec] File my1337file.2007.BluRay.720p.x264-H2.part047.rar part 9 failed crc check [Expected  / Calculated 87963CC1]
[12/01/2008 2:51:06 PM] [Dec] File my1337file.2007.BluRay.720p.x264-H2.part047.rar part 10 failed crc check [Expected  / Calculated 426BEB8B]

form what i gather , these are not missing blocks so backup server has nothing to do with them.... maybe bad hard drive.

again any advice ie appreciated

Maybe a stupid question, but did you added some new (crappy) memory lately?
From what i see from your log i had the same thing for about 8 months ago. Added a brand new 1 gig strip and from that moment things started as you described. Also using Winrar, crc check failures occur regularly.
It's just a hint.

Was there no value for the Expected crc?  If so, that would appear to be your problem: Alt.Binz can't determine it, so the check fails.  I'm not sure where it gets the value from, NZB or article header.  Rdl will be able to confirm, no doubt.

a "fill-in" server is configured as slave to the primary. Is this correct? thanks

Yes that is correct. Just make your main server the "Primary" then configure the second server under the Primary then press the "Backup" button to make the second server the "slave" of the Main.

Why wouldn't there be an expected crc?  Why did the calculated crc not match?  Bad memory?

Cause there was no crc to match it with. One particular version of PP has a bug and as a result there is no pcrc value at the end of the part

You're referring to:  http://www.yenc.org/broken.htm

There are only two articles that match the subject filename strings in gzilla1972's log:

"[...]2007.BluRay.720p.x264-H2.part047.rar" yEnc (09/79)
"[...]2007.BluRay.720p.x264-H2.part047.rar" yEnc (10/79)

I downloaded them and got their Message-ID's and pcrc32 values shown in my above message.

They were posted with:
X-Newsposter: Yenc-Power-Post-GB-12 Beta 7  12.2.7.0 (Modified POWER-POST)

gzilla1972's log showed for those two articles:

[Expected  / Calculated 87963CC1]
[Expected  / Calculated 426BEB8B]

Why?
