Do Not Remove Download On Article Not Found
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:50:38 am »
It would be greatly appreciated if there was an option to allow alt.binz to not remove items in download queue if the news server returns article not found.
In fact it would be really super if it would also have an option to try alternative servers configured too see if the article perhaps exists on them instead.

I have multiple servers configured and would be nice for it to try all of them for such article first before failing and then not remove it if it fails on all.

Regards

the first thing u want u can already be configured in settings->connections

https://www.altbinz.net/wiki/Advanced_Setup#Connection

the second thing is called backup server which can be set in settings->server. simply doubleclick on the server that u want as primary then highlight the secondary and press add as backup. The backup server configuration is not perfect since there is only on layer of backups instead of multiple, but still it does exist.

one layer:

Primary
Backup 1-Backup 2-Backup 3

multiple:

Primary
Backup 1
Backup 2
Backup 3

Thank you for the info! Didn't realize however on the first point:
I see there is the retry count is there an infinity value?

no the maximum is number 999 retries, but since u can input a time period between tries up to 1440 min or 1 Day this outlasts the Retention of any available usenetaccount... but i am not sure which way arroud it works:

Primary     try 1
Secondary try 1

Primary     try 2
Secondary try 2

or

Primary     Try 1-999
then
Secondary Try 1-999

i suspect version 1 since it makes more sense but I'm not sure since i've never tested it myself.

Bear in mind that setting these numbers so high will prevent Alt.Binz from ever completing the (partial) download and repairing any missing articles, which in 99.9% of cases is what you actually want to happen.

There's actually very little reason to keep any incompletes in the queue.  Put another way: for almost every reason you might think you have for it, there's already a better alternative.
