Doesn't submit log in data
« on: May 14, 2009, 02:15:21 am »
Hi,

My problem is that I can't make a successful connection. But I tried many things to fix this and nothing.

The problem start last Friday. Before that day all was going right, I can make downloads with no problems. My usenet provider is nntpjunkie.

When I try to download some stuff, Alt Binz doesn't establish a connection, but the weird thing is that in the log it doesn´t print me errors.
I can use 32 basic connections, so I tried with only one basic connection, but with no success. Then I change my log in settings, like my username, to see if it returns me some error, but it doesn't!, the log print me the same as when log in parameters are correct.

Here is a copy paste of the log when I try to connect:
[14/05/2009 06:23:04 p.m.] [Main] Alt.Binz 0.25.0 [27.09.2007] started.

This problem only happens in this computer, in another computer I can establish a successful connection. The problem is that I only own this computer.

Nttpjunkie has an option in their page http://nntpjunkie.com/ that has newsgroup search and I can download directly there, but is very tedious finding what I want and then selecting all the good articles to download them, but I can download also in that way, I mean the problem is when I use a newreader.

Today at morning I successfully get connected with only one basic connection, and then I disconnected and tried with more basic connections, but with no success. Then I returned my settings to 1 basic connection and to try again, but again it doesn't get connected.

I have try shutting down my firewalls (windows firewall and COMODO) and my antivirus, clearing my cache, reinstalling my network driver, reset my network configuration, changing the port number in alt binz, even repair windows installation and change my MAC address. All of this with no success.

I make a traceroute to news.nntpjunkie.com and send it back to nntpjunkie support to see what they say, and they said this:
"The traceroute test looks like your PC can resolve the Internet address and IP address information okay, and is getting as far as our gateway. For general security purposes the vast majority of ping and traceroute tests are resticted at our gateway, so it does look like you are able to connect to our network."

The nntpjunkie's support sucks, I send like 10 mails and they answer telling me to do things I already did.

Please help me!!!  :'(
please please please...

Thanks & best regards,
Rodrigo Baca

You could try to telnet into the server and login manually to see what's happening.  Otherwise the simplest solution is to get a better provider:

http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html

$11 p/m, 20 connections + SSL, unlimited

the only thing i could suggest is going to the computer that works copy the server.abz, located in in .../Alt.binz/misc. take it to the other computer and replace the existing. if that doesn't work reinstall alt.binz and paste the working server.abz in the misc folder...

How can I do that step by step?

I will try that on Friday, because I have access to 2 computers right now, the one with the problem and a macbook  without windows on it... So I will tell you whatever happens on Friday.

But I think that changing the file won't make a difference. Because I tried with another newsreader, to see if the problem was altbinz, but also the other newsreader fail in the same way.

Thanks!
Best regards,
Rodrigo

Sounds like NNTP traffic is being blocked by your firewall (software or hardware) - you may need to do more than just disable it manually, check your firewall documentation.

I'm now with astraweb and altbinz doesn't have any problem!!!

But I already have 10 days with nntpjunkie, until my account expires. So I don't know why my computer is not allowing me to connect to news.nntpjunkie.com??? What it could be? Remember that

Works fine here:

telnet news.nntpjunkie.com 119
