downloads not showing?
« on: August 24, 2008, 06:07:04 pm »
alright so i downloaded my stuff using alt.binz 0.25.0
i'm running vista.
it said that the download was 100%, but when i go to the folder, it doesn't exist.
i know it actually downloaded because i can still look at the files in alt.binz
is this just a problem with vista, or is there something i can do about this?
please help me.

well, it's not a problem with alt.binz itself, at least i don't think so, because i could delete the files and they showed up in the recycle bin and i could bring them out to my desktop and access them that way.
any ideas?

why don't you just read that thread and follow this:

5. Tell us what your log says, but only copy relevant lines! you can blur out filenames of course

Your answer is 99% there.

go to "setup" -> "log" and active "log to file" then download that file again.

Go to your log tab and copy relevant lines and paste it in here.
OR
After it has finished got to your alt.binz folder and open the log folder. You will find a .txt file in there named after the date (today). Send this file to me.

i tried that about 3 times, i think it's just an error with alt.binz.
and it's not just one specific file, i've tried a few different ones.

ok it seems like you don't want to be helped.

Anyways here is what i guess ( i could be sure if you had followed the steps mentioned):

that file was simply too old.
That means it appears to download in alt.binz but speed is 0 and it goes damn fast. After only par files are left it still says 100%.
If you then look into your log or log tab it will tell you somethin like:
420: no such article
that means that file was too old for your server.

Your Usenet provider has a retention numer. if you download something older than this number it will 99% not work.

okay, well i looked into the log, all it had was notes on connecting to the files and servers.
and it's not just one file, it's any file that i download.
anyway, the file i downloaded was 32.4 days old, and my server retention is 100 days.
it didn't go fast, at least not faster than normal.
and everything was 100%

OK, one last chance before this thread is closed.  Respond to the questions or you'll just need to look somewhere else for help:

1.  What do you mean by "i can still look at the files in alt.binz" and "i could delete the files and they showed up in the recycle bin "?  What files are we talking about here?

2. "i could bring them out to my desktop and access them that way" - please explain what you're talking about.  Are these the files you downloaded or not? If they are, what's the problem?

3. Log: does your log contain any 'article not found' or server error messages?

4. Windows Start button -> Search for files.  Anything?

Just a note about this issue my borther in law is using 25 also and is just told me he is having the exact same issue under vista. Downloads are not appearing under the download folder like they should be. I havent had time to go over and check it out yet, but I will post my findings as soon as possible.

So where are they being downloaded to?  They won't have just disappeared.  If any Vista users have made the mistake of setting the download directory some place they don't have write permission (under Program Files for example), then Vista should create a virtual directory under the user directory.

In any case, this should be quickly solved by Start button -> Search for files ...
