File xxxxx is missing part xx
« on: May 20, 2008, 03:12:55 am »
I am using a for pay usenet service to supplant my ISP's service, however it seems to be causing an issue with missing parts.

I have both serves set up as Primary servers so that they will both be accessed at the same time.  The problem is that if one of the servers is missing an article and Alt.binz tries to download, then it won't try to download that part from the other server.  So in case a large file is completely on one server and not the other, then it will only download part of the file and list the parts that that is tried on the other server as missing.

If I disable the server that is missing parts for the file, then the file is downloaded fine.

How do I leave all servers enabled to maximize my download speeds when it's available on both, but not miss the parts when they're only available on one?

Add the pay server as a backup for the ISP

Server 1: Primary = ISP, Secondary = Pay
Server 2: Primary = Pay

Just make sure you have enough threads available for it to switch to the Pay server when needed.

But it isn't always the ISP server that is missing parts.  Sometimes the pay server is missing the parts.

It seems goofy to have to reserve enough threads for when a backup.  That effectively halves the number of connections I can have if both servers have all of the parts.

So add the ISP server as a backup to the pay server too.

If you don't have enough connections available then it will just keep trying until the part is downloaded. Just be aware that *some* pay servers ban people who keep hammering for extra threads.

Unless there's something unusual about your setup or the package you bought, any pay server should max out your connection speed on its own, usually without needing the maximum threads available.

I have Road Runner Turbo which is 15Mbps down and 2Mbps up.  (It was 10/1, but apparently they upped it just recently?) My pay server is Newsfeeds, which has a max thread of 6.  Combined with the max 2 threads from my ISP, I usually max out around 900KB/s.  I experimented with adding another pay server trial recently and was able to get 1.8MB/s (which surprised me because I didn't know about the speed increase).

So every thread that I don't have active is slowing down my max speed.

900 kB/s seems a bit measly for a 15 Mbit service, given that my 8 Mbit gives me 830 kB/s (i.e. 6.5 Mbps -ish), with which Giganews maxes me out on 5 threads in unthrottled conditions.  Really I think you just need to invest in a decent provider, or look again at your setup.  Ultimately it's just not worth dicking around with these things.

BUT that doesn't mean that the Alt.Binz server setup isn't in need of a refresh, as has been discussed at some length in this forum for a while now.  :)

You should have something as a backup even if it's a 3rd server; a cheap block account or "Freebin".

I have RoadRunner also, I'm not sure why you have so many incompletes. My completion rate is almost 100%, and if not pars are always plentiful. Also I max out my 10mbps connection with 4 threads (at least during the day, in the evening it lags a lot).
