Skins? Search facilities? Whatever. I like apps with vanilla wrappers. I edited the config file to clean up the interface leaving only the Connect, NZB, Cleanup and Setup tabs - text, no icons. Cut the sizes and spacing down and moved things around a bit. Essentially did what I could figure out but was hoping someone here could clue me in on anything more possible. Kind of surprised, though, that there's no real answer coming from the "pros" on the board. (I mean, what do you people do here
)
While I have, on occasion, tried out cracked versions of a latest release I always go back to the last free version as I don't see anything of any real merit in the new stuff. Believe me, if there was something worthwhile I'd be on Paypal tomorrow but eye candy and superfluous extras don't interest me. All I wanna do is dl, par-check/complete and unrar. Even the watch-as-you-download facility of v0.25.0 is no biggie as it's just as easy to
send the first rar to VLC - although the control you get from integrating a user's choice of viewer puts it well ahead of Bintube's downloader.
As far as nzb search you can't beat all the useful info offered on Matrix or Merlins for helping you make choices of what to grab. And now that Newzleech is down it's a good thing my server is Bintube (which
rules) 'cause their search engine is tops for general stuff - Binsearch coming in a close second IMHO.
All in all, though, alt.binz is one of
the killer apps on the net. I'd rank it right up there with Firefox for what it can do and ease of use. Pairing alt.binz and xnews you've got usenet by the balls.
BTW I ought to know. I've been around since it was called ARPANet when I was in university studying electrical engineering back in the day before there were any PCs and programming was done with punch cards. (Probably before most of you were even born). I used to trade emails with Tim Berners Lee for info on the finer points of editing html. We used Lynx, a text-based Unix browser. This was before the www went graphic when Andreassen came out with Mosaic. So
MAJOR KUDOS to the dude who put it together! Thanks man -- whoever you are - your app will live on in internet infamy.
