How long to decode 5 gb?
« on: January 18, 2009, 06:24:22 pm »
I downloaded a single file that is about 5gb and its been decoding for over an hour. I was wondering if this is normal and how long it might take, I have a e4600 and 4 gigs of ram, cpu and ram usage is low.

edit-I just checked the log and i'm getting a error:
[1/18/2009 12:47:46 PM] [Dec] File D:\***\4f484aebb3d83302a891e89e0aaeb48d\part.1 is locked by another program!
[1/18/2009 12:47:46 PM] [Dec] Retrying in 5 seconds

Not too sure what it means, I have no other programs running that would access that file.

Antivirus?  You should exclude Alt.Binz and all its directories from the scanner, and/or switch off any NNTP scanning.

Failing that, try exiting then restarting Alt.binz.

I saw a post about av software so I stopped all av services and tried closing and re-opening alt.binz. In the log, the error doesn't show anymore, it still shows as decoding but I don't think it's doing anything. Usually when it's decoding a meter comes up and shows the progress but for this file it just says decoding.

If I browse to the folder I see all the parts of the file, is there any other way to put it together?

Do you really mean that the file is actually a single 5GB post, i.e. not split into archive parts?  If so, it's not surprising that Alt.Binz might struggle a bit, but you should be seeing some CPU/mem activity.

You could try UUD32 as an alternative:

Thanks but I don't think that app will work either. And yes, it is 1 large 5gb file-12,231 389kb parts >:( I have no idea why.

I think i'll just try to get the files from a different source

Actually I tried the UUD program one more time and while I couldn't copy the files from clipboard or open files from within the program, I was able to get it working by drag and dropping the files in and hitting extract. Thanks for the tip.

Incidentally, I was just reminded to look at the changelog:

0.28.4
* Newzleech nfo [link]
* Decoding of >4GB files
https://www.altbinz.net/forum/index.php?topic=2313.0
* Not resuming decoding after program restart

https://www.altbinz.net/index.php?page=vhistory

I forgot all about that thread, d'oh!
