Slow download speed
« on: December 12, 2010, 10:39:22 am »
I have currently experiencing slow download speed (around 50-60KB/s with 10 connections) with 0.33.X

I move back to 0.25 and I get full speed (700KB/s).  I also tried both Usenet-News and Astraweb, and both are giving me similar speed.

I also tried SSL and no SSL, it also makes no difference with the slow speed.

I also turn off Anti-virus and Windows 7 firewall, again, it makes no difference in speed.

Any other suggestion?

AVAST. Now I'm sure it's AV.

Consult http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55175.0 on how to disable nntp traffic scan.

I already have NNTP traffic disable on AVAST.  I have been using AVAST 5 for many months already, and I get full speed on alt binz 0.25, it is only 0.33.X that I am getting slow speed.

I also just tried NewsBin Pro, and I also get full speed.  I am going to uninstall AVAST now and I will report back.

Uninstall AVAST 5, connect my pc directly to my ADSL2 router (rather than wireless), I still get slow speed.

So I connect my PC using 3G wireless modem directly.  I appear to be getting faster than 55K.  So I thought it might has something to do with my router.  Reboot my router, it does not make any difference.  I put my PC on the DMZ, still it does not make any difference.

Any other suggestion?  Am I the only one having problem with slow speed?

I can only suggest to try with clean config.

I have done more testing.  I can get FULL speed USB wireless 3G modem, but get 50K/s with my Billion ADSL2 Router.  So the problem is definitely something to do with how AltBinz 0.33 and my ADSL2 router interact with each other.  Note:  I have checked and  it is NOT SSL.

Is there anything difference in terms of how altbinz 0.33 and 0.25 estabish connection to the news server?

When I get back home tonight, I will keep trying some of the older version and hopefully can identify which version of Altbinz cause the slow down.

Thank you so much for your time to help me.  Greatly appreciate.

Hi Rdl,

I only manage to download some of the older version.  The last version which give me full speed is 0.28.5

The next version which I manage to download is 0.31.2 and it already has the slow down problem for me.

Does this information give you any hint?

Yes, done a clean install multiple times.  The strange things is using 3G modem by USB, I get full speed.  Only the combination of altbinz 0.3X.X and higher with my ADSL2+ router, I get slow speed.
