Is auto-saving a copy of an auto imported NZB possible?
« on: April 23, 2012, 05:20:40 am »
Hi all,

I am not sure if this is something others get but I am hoping someone can help?

Version 39.5 / Usenet providers - Astraw./Supern.

I have always used the auto-import NZB function of Alt.binz and have found for some time and recently much more frequently that if I grab releases that are within minutes or hours of release that I often find that the .RAR or the first few rar's will be missing upon download completion. Consequently, Alt.binz will either download the par's to no avail or will not even try to download the par set (assuming it works out that it doesn't have enough in the par set to do a repair)

I use Sick beard for my daily shows and the problem with this download issue is that it breaks the rest of my subsequent automated process.

The only remedy I have found for this is to go into Alt.binz and manually search for the nzb that sick beard used and to manually re-add it. Alt.binz typically finds the files that were not downloaded the first time, completes the download but does or doesn't unrar successfully afterwards.

I am guessing that what is happening here is that sickbeard is grabbing releases whilst they have yet to be completed or listed/propagated wholly by my newsgroup provider?

I am not sure if this is something more sinister but two thoughts I had on how to tackle this issue were:
1. Upon Auto-import of the NZB, Alt.binz puts a copy of the NZB file somewhere like the download folder so I can simply go and double click it should this occur. I could add the .nzb as a 'clean up' file type if the download was successful.
2. Implement some sort of 'minimum post age' for all downloads on the assumption that this is a problem created by sickbeard grabbing new posts too soon?

Any guidance or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Nick

Firstly, Alt.Binz will save a copy of autoimported NZBs in the NZB folder unless you have set the option to delete them in Setup > NZB.

Secondly, if you want to try to solve the problem of missing articles from within Alt.Binz, then you should adjust the settings under Setup > Connection, increase your retry attempts and delay between retries, and you should also add a backup server to your primary.

Thirdly, you can write batch scripts to move NZBs around if you really need that - see Execute Command on Completion.

But finally - and probably the main point - if you're using some external software to grab NZBs, you should probably ask the devs what the options are for delaying the grabs for at least a few hours, or only running the searches at certain scheduled times, etc. Perhaps the proggy can be launched & closed as a scheduled task periodically?

Many thanks for your assistance.

I will try all your suggestions, I did notice I had retries set to zero so I have changed this to 3 with a wait of 10mins between tries, hopefully this will improve my completion rate.

Regards,

Nick
