Configuration Problem???
« on: May 16, 2012, 10:18:38 am »
Hi everyone,

I'm quite new to newsgroups and Alt Binz and currently running the latest version.

I've just upgraded my Virgin Media broadband speed from 10 meg upto their 60 meg package.  The first time I downloaded a large nzb file (32gb) I couldn't get more than 4mb/s download, after talking to a friend who had the same problem when he upgraded he advised me to change the settings in the connection speed and to set this to 80000kb/s, after doing this my download speed went to 32mb/s but only for around 5 - 6 minutes, it then dropped back to 4mb/s.

Can anyone tell me the correct settings to make full use of my new 60 meg speed.  I am using Astraweb with windows 7 home premium 64 bit with no security software currently running so that I could rule that out as slowing my download speed.  Every speed test I have done, both myself and the Virgin Media tech team all show my download speed as 64mb/s so I am at a loss as to what is causing the serious lack of speed.

So to recap if anyone can tell me what the correct connection speed settings should be to make full use of my upgraded speed and any other settings that may also need to be changed.

Thanks everyone for all your help

Noel

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I don't think the problem is with being throttled as your link suggests, I should have said that when my speed dropped I used Grabit and it showed a speed of 47mb/s, also I had not downloaded enough for the throttling limits to startup so i think there is someting wrong with the way i've set up Altbinz, I just don't know what as I cannot get my full download speed or even get a consistent speed for more than a few minutes.

Quick update.  I gave my pc to my friend who has Alt binz working with his 100mb connection and getting full download speed and got him to check and test my settings which he did, however just like me he could not get my downloads over 4.5mb/s, even though on his pc it will do the full 100mb with no problems so he installed Grabit on my pc and with his connection was getting full download speeds of 102mb/s but couldn't do this with Alt Binz.

Is it possible my pc doesn't like Alt binz, perhaps a driver causing it to slow down, I'm running windows 7 home premium on a home built pc based upon a Zotac Ion itx motherboard with 4GB ram and dual 1.6Ghz atom cpu, all with a clean install of windows.

Has anyone ever had such a problem or know of a possible solution, I'm going to install windows xp pro over the next few days if I can't resolve it to see if it helps.  I really don't want to move away from alt binz as it's the better of the 2 applications, so much so that I've just paid for the software.

Could you post a screenshot of Task manager-> Performance (set View->CPU history to one graph per CPU, View->Update speed to Normal) during full speed in altbinz and another when speed drops. Is altbinz decoding the file when speed drops?

Hi,

I've tried to do the screen shots but I am never able to get full download speed using windows 7,  also the program appears to hang as soon as opened under windows 7 both 32 and 64 bit although the download does occur, and I have to force the program to close, the download speed will not even update, all of this on a clean install of windows 7.

I have done 2 screen shots and sent them to you in a private mail, one as you asked for and one showing the services running in the background, as you can see Alt Binz is taking a lot of the cpu processing power, more than i would expect.

Hope you are able to offer some feedback as Grabit works but I really want to continue with Alt Binz.

Regards

Quick update,

As suggested by Rdl I have tried using non ssl connections but this still does not help, Alt Binz runs fine with no active connection, however as sonn as there is an active connection the cpu usage jumps from around 4% to 100% and the program appears to hang, although the nzb's still download very, very slowly but the speed statistics never update themselves.  I have tried installing windows 8 Beta to see if it would solve the problem but it didn't help.  Grabit still works at full speed everytime, no matter what OS i'm using or what settings I have configured the client to.

Can anyone offer any reason as to why this is happening, the only thing I can think of is a bug in the scripting, perhaps the fact I'm using a dual core atom cpu has some impact but as I said Grabit works with no problems, I just prefer to use Altbinz.

What's the number of connections you're using? Can you start from 2 connections and working your way up with few thought on evry step. Also woth playing with is Setup->Misc #2-> Decoder sleep cycle options (to slow down decoder thread)

Try with 50 lines/ 10ms

Obviously other altbinz threads are choking main thread (no graphics update) - 0.4x series will focus on improving that aspect of altbinz.

Hi there!

Since 23.05.2012 I am having the same problem with a capping speed of about 108 kB/s. Before, it ran like hell at about 20Mbit/s.
I did no changes that I know of and the strange thing is that sometimes it gives me high speed, hours after starting it, running at 108kB/s.
When I start it, next day, it again runs on 108kB/s.
While it runs on slow speed I still have my full bandwidth with other applications like firefox, streaming, etc.

I am using Windows 7, as well and my firewall does not seem to be the problem.

This sucks big time and a good solution would be much appreciated.

Regards
