lost settings
« on: May 23, 2008, 02:48:46 am »
I am having trouble in various ways.I have donated and got the 0.27 version of Altbinz but when I start it up i keep getting the message advising it is the  free version. After setting up using quick start guides I find the settings gone when starting up again. I am also findin all sorts of folders being deposited on my desktop after downloading e.g. nzb, misc, log, temp. Can you advise?

First of all, the latest version is 0.28.0.  You should get that instead.

Second, when installing a new version you should just copy the altbinz.exe file to your installation folder, allowing it to over-write the one that's already there.  This will preserve all of your settings.  If you're seeing folders on your desktop, this must mean that you're actually launching the altbinz.exe on your desktop - because  Alt.Binz will create those folders if it doesn't find them in the folder from which it's being launched.

Third, if you're using Vista and have persistent problems, install Alt.Binz in a folder outside of Program Files.

P.S.

For a first installation, just make a folder for Alt.Binz, put the altbinz.exe in it, and launch it from there.

Thanks for your help. At the risk of sounding absolutely stupid could you guide me through the whole process because I have tried to download the latest version and haven't even got that far. I am using windows XP and I get as far as open in the downloading initial process and it seems to stop at that point.

OK ...

Go to the Daily Builds forum, find the thread for 0.28.0, find the link for 0.28.0, click on it, wait a few seconds for the Open/Save dialog to appear, then wait again (you may need to click on the greyed-out OK button if you're using Firefox), then save to your desktop.  There should now be an altbinz028.zip file on your desktop.  Unzip it.  You should now have an altbinz.exe file, a lang folder and a changelog.txt file.  Make a folder in Program Files (or elsewhere) called 'altbinz' (or 'fruityloops', it doesn't matter), and move the unzipped files into it.  Now double-click on the altbinz.exe in 'fruityloops' to launch.  Alt.Binz will create new subfolders if needed in 'fruityloops', now you can enter Setup and follow the rest of the guide.

Hope that helps.  I'm not sure how to break it down anymore.
