Did you set up a server?

Also check the log tab (enable detailed logging in setup)

No doubt your (detailed) Log will show many 'Article not found' messages, meaning the articles are too old for your server's retention.  Search the forum for 'article not found'.

No, look at your log from when you were downloading.  Try with the NZB again and watch your log.

EDIT: there's no ping reply from news.virgin.com, but there is from news.virgin.net.  I have no idea whether this ISP-provided service supports binary groups, or what its rention might be, but most ISP services are crappy on both counts.  In any case, you can also try playing with the 'Select group' and 'ARTICLE command' settings in Setup > Servers to see if that improves things (click APPLY and RECONNECT after changing anything here).

Then your server doesn't carry binary groups.  Check with your service provider to be sure.

Really you want to be going with a proper provider, check out some of the deals and free trials here:

Thanks for all the quick answers.

 Do I need to change any firewall settings or router settings, Ive checked virgin and it does support binaries. Do I need to setup access with virgin or is it automatic as they are my service providor.

I am adding the server address and tick add as primary, then I search for file, right click and add to queue, connect. am I doing something wrong

You'll need to ask Virgin whether you need username & password.  Actually, you shouldn't be able to connect to the server at all if it needs authentication - the same goes for your firewall (you can always disable it temporarily to test, though).

Are you sure you tried ticking the 'Select group' box on Server > Setup, then Apply & re-connect?

The type of binary download shouldn't make a difference.  The only important factors are:

1) whether your server carries the binary group from which you're trying to download;

2) whether your server's retention allows you to download the file, i.e. it's not too old.

At this point, I think you really need to do some more investigating yourself.  Feel free to read through these for general help and advice on usenet, and come back if you have any specfic Alt.Binz questions:
