RSS Filters - Noob Query
« on: April 24, 2009, 10:31:44 am »
Hi Folks

New and very inexperienced AltBinz user here. I have followed the instructions on the Wiki and set up RSS feeds from my Newzbin account, successfully  ;D However I am now attempting to set-up some filters and have 1 or 2 questions:-

1: I was looking to set up a filter - as per the Wiki to unrar files to a specific location, however that specific location is the 'D' drive in my set-up. I am aware that that the 'D' is used as a switch to deny downloads and was wondering how this would affect my filter to unrar files to my specified drive letter 'D' ie: would the following filter actually deny download and unrar:-

*show1*s02* | A | | D:\MyShows\Show1

When entering the filter the D remains red in colour, which I assume is indicating denial of download - if so I presume I would have to transfer my files to a drive other than the 'D' drive.

2: If looking for a specific download from a particular release group, do I have to filter to exclude all other groups or can I filter to include a specific group. I have included a sample filter below - will this only download those series, which have CSI/Grey's Anatomy and either CTU or Dimension releases - ignoring all others.

;Include:
CSI* | A
Grey's Anatomy* | A
Dimension* | A
CTU* | A

;Exclude:
*svcd* | D
*xVid* | D
*pdtv* | D
*proper* | D
*DVD* | D

Sorry for the long-winded questions. I appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

Ignore the color (monor bug)

I would write filters this way:

CSI*720* | A
Grey*Anatomy*720* | A
*proper* | D

Dimension* | A
CTU* | A
^--- wouldn't work

*Dimension | A
*CTU | A
^---- would, but using these would auto-queue a LOT of shows you don't really want.

*DVD* | D
^---- this would also block *DVDRip* from queueing, this was not your intention then use something like this instead: *DVD.* | D
(if your feed even carries dvdrips, there's some that don't)

Personally I also include the season in the filters
ie:
Reaper.s02* | A
Mythbusters.S07* | A
In.Plain.Sight.S02* | A
This makes it ignore any older season posts,
but I have to change the numbers when the season number changes (once a year).

Hi Rdl and DM8Mydog

Thanks for the responses and to Rdl for setting me up so quickly - its appreciated.

Rdl - The only thing with your filter, might be that it will pick up all files with "720" (that right?). There are several groups who use this in their releases, therefore I assume these would picked up too. This is why I was trying to be uber-selective - am I being too picky?

DM8Mydog  - thanks for the heads up.

Seems like there are no fixed rules, but several alternatives - will test various combinations and let you know how I get on.

No, it will pick just CSI and Grey

Sorry didn't quite make that clear  :-[ - yes it will pick up those shows, but also all CSI and Grey with 720 in the filename - therefore could end up with several downloaded files from different release groups eg:-

Greys.Anatomy.S05E20.720p.HDTV.x264-CTU - [01/32] - ctu-x264-greys.anatomy.520.par2 (1/1)

SPyRoX Presents: Grey's Anatomy S05E15 WMVHD NLSubs 720p [00/22] - "Greys.Anatomy.S05E15.720p.HDTV.SPyRoX.nzb" yEnc (2/2)

The first file is the release I want, the second not, but with your filter wouldn't it pick up both?

So many options, its a minefield  ;) He He this could get very confusing.

Thanks again

Why not to seperate filters for two relasegroups? i've sometimes used two filters to get posts that are named in the format of 1x01...

;Include:
*CSI*S0x*CTU* | A
*Grey's Anatomy*S0x*CTU*  | A
*CSI*S0x*Dimension* | A
*Grey's Anatomy*S0x*Dimension*  | A

;Exclude:
*svcd* | D
*xVid* | D
*pdtv* | D
*proper* | D
*DVD5* | D
*DVD9* | D

Edith: But ur right filters is a sort of trial and error kind of thing

ur welcome. on second thought i would suggest to try without the dvd denial first. the dvd denial is quite tricky to get right and u might very well find it to be unnecessary after all...

Yeah I noticed that this morning when checking downloads from last night, in spite of the fact that I had 'DVD' denied in the filter list - DVD files were downloaded. Is there some form of 'bug' that ignores the DVD denial? or any tips to get it to work. Perhaps as you say there is sufficient allowable information to weed out the DVD element - I presume this is what you meant.

Trial and error maybe?

i am not aware of such a bug maybe u had:
dvd* | D or
*dvd | D
instead of
*dvd* | D

i think it might be very tough to set deny dvd without missing out on wanted posts since some poster include expressions like dvdrip, hddvd or  dvd5/9 even in posts that are 720p... maybe it might be easier to choose a different source that already does the filtering for u or allows filtering according to size...

Thanks I see what you mean - good call, hadn't thought of that. The more you dig, the more complex this becomes - will persevere though  ;D

Quick heads up to those who took the time to offer solutions to my problem - I solved it and ditched Newzbin. I spent a lot of time (and I mean a lot of time)  >:( today trying various combinations of filters, both on AltBinz and in Newzbin, but just couldn't get anything to work to my satisfaction. Eventually following some searching here I tracked down a post in which Hecks suggested NZBs(dot)ORG   http://www.nzbs.org/  as a more suitable site for RSS downloading.

Taking his advice I registered and 3 clicks later, I'm now able to filter the RSS feed to my requirements.

My research and testing leads me to understand that in order to use Newzbin, any filter has to mirror exactly the wording of the Report heading (eg: South Park - 13x07 - Fatbeard; filter would have to read *South Park - 13*) - as these don't contain Group release names or container types any filters originally suggested by me and the subsequent options provied by other posters were, in effect, rendered useless. Similarily any denials are limited and rendered pointless if you want to use file information (eg: DVD, svcd, hr.hdtv etc) as the Report header's contain none.

With NZBs(dot)ORG I can now quite happily filter all my shows, with the correct release groups and not have to worry (I don't think) about downloading unrequired files.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it makes sense and that others in a similar position don't need to learn the hard way as I had today. Thanks again for all your help.

Yes, presumably the idea with Newzbin is to customize the feed as precisely as possible with your params in Newzbin itself, then do only minimal filtering in Alt.Binz on the unique url.

Yes, Alt.Binz filters are only applied to <title> elements, i.e. Name column on RSS tab.

The nzbs(dot)org feeds are very nice, especially since you can now save the cart to a 'My NZB' feed, and have saved searches feeds - which means you can add stuff to Alt.Binz remotely if it's monitoring those feeds.

Yep - just a pity that the filter params are extremely limited - certainly in comparison to NZBs(dot)ORG - great site and thanks for the heads up.

Just a quick question - After setting up My Searches, does NZBs(dot)ORG automatically add NZBs to the search, based on the parameters, and providing the RSS feed is set up correctly, it will download only those files added to the My Searches - acting as an advance filter?

Finally is there a way for AltBinz to automatically remove downloaded files from the retrieved list, or does this require the user to uncheck 'timer' and physically clear the list.

Thanks
