you have to learn difference between Mbps and MB/s coz it's not the same....

you wrote that you have 10 megs line... is it 10 Mbps (10 megaBITS per second) or 10 MB/s (10 megaBYTES per second) (I doubt it's 2nd one, so lets say it is 10 Mbps)?

on 10 Mbps (10 megaBITS per second) line, you can't download more then 1.25 MB/s (1.25 megaBYTES per second).... so, if your PC-A is downloading 1.25 MB/s, PC-B doesn't have any more bandwith to use.... and when PC-B starts downloading at 300 kb/s (kiloBYTES per second), PC-A slows down a bit to cca 1 MB/s (but sometimes it shows more coz it's not showing actual speed in realtime)

solution for this? on PC-A, make your alt.binz run at 50% of the actual speed of your line (in setup, put your actual speed, close it, and on alt.binz click on "No Limit" and put it on 50%) and do the same on PC-B.... both running at 50% gives you 100% of you bandwith

See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabit ;D

Btw, concerning balancing the speed (if you'd want that) you should set a speed limit on both pc's half of the max speed (in this case probably being around 1.3 MB/s) which can be done through alt.binz as well. (or is that not supported in 0.25?)

I do know the difference, but I didn't realize the speed was in Alt.Binz was listed as kB/s. I thought it said kbps. :/  Ok, well, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the clarification. :D

We will balance the speed between the computers and see if that clears up the heavier slow down on the second computer. We're both running wireless and his computer is closer to the router. I wouldn't be surprised if that has something to do with it.

Thanks much. :)

Apparently, my husband is not getting his point across clearly. We have Verizon FIOS with a 10 Mbps download connection speed. Testing the line shows that we are getting roughly 10.4 Mbps download speed. But, that is a line test. It is not what we are getting when actually downloading. We are getting less than 1/10th of that. We are maxing out our Alt.Binz download bandwidth at just under 1.25 Mbps - total (not per computer). We max out at 1.25 Mbps regardless of whether one or both computers are downloading, even though our max download capacity is significantly higher. We aren't sure if (a) it's a problem with Verizon FIOS, (b) is a problem with the newsgroups service we are signed with, or (c) is the result of a setting in Alt.Binz that we may have overlooked. Is this more clear?

I am starting to lean toward the suggestion above that it is with the ISP, as we have had other FIOS issues as of late.

now i get it. i figure it's either a) or b). who is your usenetprovider and which plan have you signed up for? i would guess either your usenet-provider is crapy under 2 Mbps would have to be a free one (unlikly) or your isp is monitoring traffic and slows down certain port associated with usenet, that's most usenet providers have alternative ports to get arround this problem...

So, to summarise:

4. Mbps != MB/s. 10 Mbps = 1.2-1.3 MB/s.

...

If you do get maximum speed, then probably it's an issue with how the thread connections are being negotiated between your end and the usenet server.  Connect PC2 first, then PC1, and see if PC1 is now getting slow speeds.  Drop the number of threads allocated to each to test some more.  Try limiting the speeds on each instance of Alt.Binz (bottom left panel).  Although as I pointed out above, there will be *no* overall speed advantage to this.

If that wasn't phrased in clear enough terms, then I apologise.  In any case, everything you need to know has already been posted in this thread, including the fact that there's no speed advantage whatosever to downloading from 2 PCs on the same line unless it's a his'n'hers type of thing.

So, to summarise the summary:
