slow download help
« on: January 22, 2009, 11:54:44 pm »
I know this has been posted before and i've searched through posts but i'm still in need of a bit of help as this is all new to me (late starter i know ;-))
I've tested my broadband speed (with several different testers) and its showing 330kB (2.7Mb), i'm a premium/diamond subscriber to giganews (also downloaded giganews accelerator), i think i've set up alt.binz correctly, changed port to 443 (from 119) etc, i have unlimited download facility with my ISP (pipex) and i'm 0.6m from my exchange,i've also tried downloading using Grabit but am still experiencing slow download speeds. Anyone got any info on what could be causing it? Thanks in advance, and sorry if i've posted in the wrong section.

A few things:

1) "330kB (2.7Mb)" - if you actually mean 330 KB/s (kilobytes per second) and 2.7 Mbps (megabits per second), then yes this is a fairly modest broadband speed these days, typical of the cheaper packages.

2.7 Mbps = 2700 Kbps = 2700/8 bits = 337.5 KB/s

2) What speed did you sign up for with your ISP?  What do you consider to be "slow download speeds"? Less than the above?

3) If you signed up with your ISP for more than the above, then try at a non-peak time to see if the speed improves.

Thanks for replying Hecks.

The speed tests were carried out at various times of the day and averaged a reading of 2700 (ish) Kbps, which i then converted to give 330KB/s.

My ISP (pipex) broadband speed is supposed to be 8meg (but never above 4 in tests) although clicking on the internet connection  icon on my taskbar states that the speed is 6.7Mbps.

The speed of my downloads start pretty well and lifts to 400KB/s but then drops to 40 or lower within seconds meaning downloading a movie can takes hours, connections to giganews (i'm allowed 20) constantly fluctuating.

However when i download from rapidshare (i'm a premium member there as well) it can take a fraction  of that time. So ISP dont seem to be throttling back my connection.
Thanks again
Mick

There seems to be a contradiction here.  The speedtests report 2.7 Mbps, your ISP offers 8 Mbps, your taskbar says 6.7 Mbps (roughly 830 KB/s, quite normal for 8 Mbps packages) and Rapidshare is, you say, faster?  The speedtests should be the most accurate.  I see those kinds of slow speeds in peak hours (evenings), there's no point increasing numbers of connections as this doesn't help with this kind of traffic issue (congested exchange), but I get full speed in the early hours / mornings.

In any case, if you're sure that your router and network card are OK, and you've tested with all firewalls and antivrus off, then really you need to take it up with your ISP to see if there's a fault on your line ... or whether you've violated the Fair Use policy and have been throttled.

Edit: er, I think I didn't read your post carefully enough.

No wlan connection, home PC and using adsl filter and hard wired to phone socket, no wireless connection. Hacking me off now as the downloads from rapidshare are ok.
Thanks for input guys.

How much faster does rapidshare run? Have you tried connecting to giganews on port 80 (i assume no ssl)? Both rapidshare and giganews have very nice bw coming into their servers. However, with giganews you have many simultanious connections (I assume the same does not hold true on rapidshare, I have never payed for premium). These extra connections should allow giganews to easily match or beat whatever speed you can get from the BEST single connection in the world.

In my experience, you should NEVER drop to 40KB/s ever... These companies (like rapidshare) have made MASSIVE investments in connectivity. There are people who easily max out 100m connections. Even on a modest connection such as yours, Your isp or home network is almost certainly at fault.

Is your cpu usage abnormally high when you have the insufficient speed? Try fewer (yes fewer) threads. With a good service you really don't need them. I max out my 20m line with 4-5, even during high traffic times.

The downside of many threads is higher cpu usage, and a more apparent hard drive bottleneck. If you are able to try the pay version, it caches parts (sections from each thread) in memory until they are combined. IMHO, this is an almost essential function when downloading from usenet.

Also, I have Kaspersky Internet Security. When I first installed it, I found that my processor usage was through the roof, and I got very bad speed. I narrowed this down by disabling kis and the speed went up, and cpu usage down. I was able to fix this easily by telling KIS not to scan any traffic generated by altbinz (adding it as trusted). Similar issues may exist on other av/firewall applications, try disabling them (at least temporarilly) and see if speed improves.
