most likely ist a problem of the isp or your usenet provider test it with an other freeware newsreader like grabit and you'll see...

if its true what they told you at the news provider i would be you isp so 2 speak your internet provider... test your speed:

http://www.giganews.com/performance.html

my dl speed sunkt for some time down to 400k now its up at 630 again when 750 would be the theoretical max...

try changing port - maybe isp has throttled your port - try 119/443/80 or any other port the news provider supports - if you have a router/firewall update them also :D
have also heard of ppl slowing down after moving to an SSL connection - have you done that recently  ?

This is a tad confusing.  You say that when you double-click on your server settings, the Number of Connections box = 1?  Change it to 8 and make sure you click Apply.

But then you see 8 threads in the connection panel (toggle F9)?  Both of these things can't be true.  But certainly if you only have one active thread, that would explain your speed problems.

Otherwise 99% likely to be your ISP traffic-shaping.  Try at different times of the day, and especially outside of peak times, and see if there's a difference.

well had my isp re-set my modem and check everything was as it should be. had demon re-set my account. did a speed test results were
download - 2528kbps
upload - 360kbps

yet as soon as i connect with alt bins i get the same problem no more than 150kb/s?

the connection settings thing i mentioned earlier was that no matter how many connection i enter in the box or which ever port i enter after clicking apply and exiting it always reverts to 1 connection and port 119
but in the connection panel i have the full eight slots active just very slow ?

any more ideas? please

I found this using google

Quote
3.2 Demon FUP - if your use of the connection has exceeded the "Fair
Usage"
action limit your daytime (0900-2300) speeds may be limited to ~128k.
See Q.11

Do you think they may be capping your download speed for over-usage?  Have you tried to test your download speed using another site?  Google should be able to provide the address of one of these.

Another thought to see if it is the speed of Demon's newsgroups is to signup for a free test at one of the other newsgroup providers.

I believe Giganews currently have a free 3 day trial (please read the T+Cs though as they may need you to cancel your trial account).  The will also allow you to use other ports to see if Demon are shaping your traffic on port 119.

I noticed a similar slowdown and have been able to track it to the speed limiting. When I unselect scheduler and remove any speed limit I get full speed d/ls again. Otherwise its been staying around 200k or less, never above. I have the speed limit set to 50% to 80% during the day and I get about 20-30% when its engaged. Running version 26.5, think it started around 26.3 but not sure.

Hope this helps.

as mentioned many times it all points to your ISP.
They probably slow down your connection.
Contact them.

ok rang my isp again (25p a min) they did a speed check and the file came in at 1.22MB which is optimum speed so no problem with isp, i cant see demon lieing about no problem there end as i have a premium account so im lost now? in the settings - servers -should the number of connections show 1 all the time ? as i've said in previous posts the connection box and port box always revert back to 1 and 119 ? although i have eight open slots downloading? is this a common thing? im running 0.25.0

open setup -> servers

dblclick on your server. (Settings will only be shown after dblclicking on a server)

you should see your settings now including connections. if not, edit them, then press ok.

But as you said, you have 8 threads running, so that should be right

What can you see on the statusbar in the left bottom corner? (it should say "no limit")

I've been reading back through the thread trying to understand the problem further.

Did you increase the number of connections with Grabit?  If so and you still had the same fluctuating download speed it must be the newserver provided by Demon.

If it stabilised then it must be the number of threads.

I've recorded myself adding a new server on a fresh install of alt.binz, I'll PM you the link as soon as it has uploaded.

Watch the recording and see if there is any difference to how you have been adding your server and post if it works, or not.

Good luck.
