Very Very Slow Download Speed
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:11:05 pm »
Hello Everyone,

I've just moved from newsleecher over to alt.binz but I'm having some problems with my download speed, and have been for the last week or so; usually I get 800/1000 kbps as thats what i pay for on newsgroups but recently i've been lucky to get over 130kb/s - I know its not down to my isp as I'm able to download elsewhere at much greater speeds.

My system is windows 7 x64 with kaspersky (I've tried disabling kaspersky and restarting pc it had no effect), I've also tested out several ports and both non ssl and ssl connections with no change, and different servers. I'm running alt.binz 0.25 (obviously I'm not going to donate unless I can get it working)

has anyone got any ideas on what might be going wrong or had similar problems, I'll probably end up going back to paying for newsleecher if I can't sort this today  :(

Which provider, and how many threads?

You can rule out whether it's ISP throttling or NSP issues by trying again with Newsleecher on same setup.  Kaspersky should be set not to scan NNTP traffic.

All other things being equal, Alt.Binz should max out your available bandwidth, as it does for most users.

I say why change something that works for you. Go back and pay for newsleecher.

Are u sure the speed is displayed in kbps and not KB/s? by double-clicking on it changes from Kb/s (kbps) to Mb/s(Mbps) to KB/s to MB/s. so basicaly if u see a big B the number u see will be 8 times smaller...

I'm on astraweb unlimited with 10 connections atm as 20 just seems like overkill - and kaspersky is setup as it should be - newsleecher was on my old laptop running xp and a different anti-virus so i don't see the point in going back to something just beacuase it worked in the past - sometimes change is good  ;D  I no longer have an account for this anyway so don't want to pay for that and find out its something wrong on my pc - and the trial version expires instantly so can't try it out either...

1 mb usualy stands for 1 megabit. 8 bits are one byte hence:

1 Mbit= 125 KByte/s

Hi,

I haven't been using Alt.Binz for long but have found it to run very smoothy and quickly, with good download speeds EXCEPT with one particular file, and I'm at a loss to understand why.  Granted, it's a fairly large one (8GB), though even with a 20Gig d'load there was no massive slowdown of the program (and everything else) on my computer.  In fact it's more of a freeze; the only way to regain control of my PC is to shut down Alt.Binz from the Task Manager.  What could be causing this?  :(
