Worried but not sure if this question is allowed
« on: September 21, 2011, 09:59:01 pm »
Tried looking before hand but will Alt.Binz ever go the way of Newsleecher ? That would suck. I just hate when good programs just die or you never know what happen to them. SABnzbd could of but it didn't. The author allowed other people to continue on! I know two totally different programs but it is a perfect example how a great program can get even better if the author decides to stop.

May sound stupid to ask this question but no one ever thought Newsleecher would ever go away. Oh and the reason why I am thinking this may not be allowed is because I am naming other similar software applications.

Oh, has Newsleecher died?

As for Alt.Binz - well, anything could happen before the world ends in 2012. :P

No but some people think it has. Forum is filled with a little spam last time I looked.

I just don't want that to ever happen to alt.binz.

I'm guessing it's just another of Spiril's patented Amazing Disappearing Acts again.  He usually resurfaces after a few months working on something else.

Well, nothing ever lasts forever, but for now let's be happy that Alt.Binz continues to get plenty of TLC from Rdl. He's already stated that he'd release a version that didn't require authentication if he ever moved on from the proggy.

Who knows whether there will even be a Usenet in a year's time? Nothing is certain in this world.

Highly agree.  :) Won't name any outright to be careful but just look at that one nzb indexing site. It went down then came back but with new ownership. I knew that was going to happen one day. It was bound to. Though I don't think the courts could go after newsgroup programs at all. It is just not possible.

Usenet itself will never die but lets hope everyone that still wants to use it knows how to do headers! I still remember them. For the longest time I refused to switch to .nzb files, even though they were totally free at the time. Though after a year I finally did. Just glad I know the old school way to use Newsgroups because one day we may need to go back to it full time.

Indexing sites have become somewhat of a necessity these days, due to the deluge of passworded/trojaned spam in all the groups that make manual header downloading a giant PITA. This is a niche that Alt.Binz, with its built-in search engines and no header support, occupies quite comfortably at the moment.

But if all the sites start being hammered, I guess we'll start to see more 'local', decentralised solutions. Desktop indexing FTW!

So true! I had a good idea for what stuff was infected and what it was even with just a abbreviation. Took a little while to learn but after you do it so much it becomes second nature.
