There's been some discussion about having some kind of version update built into Alt.BinZ.. What method would you like (if any) ?
-
I like the way firefox updates, asks you to install now or after you close and restart the app.
-
only downside to auto-updates is that it will only take 1 leak then everyone will get latest versions contributor or not. (unless it somehow integrated a forum cookie for download authorization?)
if anything at all, then a notification that "an update from a download of altbinz already on your hard drive is availiable, would you like altbinz to update now"
-
I think the leak problem is easily solved by requiring to enter your forum username and password to AB update config. Make it so that the
update process only happens once a day at most, to keep traffic and load off the update server.
The leak problem would be just as much a problem if someone was to torrent the latest release.
-
Or:
*Make two public versions. One for contributors which contains the auto update functions. And one for non-contributors with that options disabled in code.
* Or disable the update function in the public releases and re-enable it in the following daily build.
-
there is no public release of new versions.....
-
in all likelihood, the only update feature we'll see will be if the .zip of the new version is dropped into the auto-import directory. (i.e., Manual Download, Auto Install)

Exactly :)

Current situation is easy enough. Extract files to alt.binz folder.
Rdl, leave it as it is. :)
-
I like the idea of having to input your forum info to either update or access AB
-
pretty sure phpbb doesnt just store the passwords as md5 values, but with are also salted.
so rdl would then need to figure out how the passwords are encoded, encode them, connect to the sql database for the forum to compare.
this would also possibly leave the database vulnerable as you would need a sql account embedded in the app for connection purposes and possibly let someone get access.
in short, far too much work and never likely to happen.

sing it with me..
We don't need no registration..
We don't need license control..
No dark DRM bracket mushroom.
Hey, Dev Team! Leave that code alone!
-
I am fine with AB as it is. I need no further features. Therefore I am only downloading newer versions when it has proven to be "stable" by not too much comments and remarks.
So: manual download, manual install, as it is now.
-
If this was a pay for use software, where you are purchasing a license, I would be all for the auto-download/auto-install. But, seeing as the software updates are on a donation basis I don't see why it would be anything other than manual everything.
I know that most of us that donated would still donate if the updates were auto, but I guarantee that some of the people donating are only doing it for the updates and trying to figure out what the minimum they have to donate is to get them (i.e. all the posts about donations refunded). These people would definitely never donate if they had an auto update feature.
-
Since this has come up in the chat again: bumpety bump bump. :)
-
A (not so for rdl) simple solution for the forum credentials would be a simple php script on the server side that uses the PHPBB authentication to check the credentials and communicates with AB over some form of encryption.
but yeah an auto update would be nice. I only just updated to 0.27.0

I don't understand why we have to make a choice as to how we will be doing updates? Why not just code the options in and give us a choice on our end like Windows update does? It seems a little silly to just choose one way and fly by it does it not? Then again I am a programmer and I personally feel that if it's possible to add all the options in without a real penalty to the software then why the hell not? End users seem to love choice.
-
the different options in the poll were to get a better idea of what people wanted.
-
+1 for let people choose their update method, like in Windows update for example

Heh you want an option to have alt.binz automagically reboot your computer if you don't press "No" within 30 minutes? lol ;D

Hehehe... and if you press "No" too many times, it just does a forced shutdown. You made it all clear, we certainly don't want to have some Windows Update routine.
Just keep it as is. C'mon, is it too much to ask to login into the forum and download the new version? Ok, I'm lazy too, but this hasn't caused my any inconvenience.
-
we dont need no stinking auto-update!
-
updates can mess things up.
The option to choose is always better.
-
Auto Download, Auto Install

It sucks that we can't edit post after a while anyway even if this doesn't happen I have my automiate checker for all my apps anyway always running. So I mostly know the instant a update is released.

Thanks guys for supporting me! :)
