2 feature sugestions.
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:28:57 am »
Yeah im new just donated today and im not expecting to have these features added anytime soon if at all.

1: But it would be nice to have a settings to uses the ram for downloading more then the hdd, Such as downloads 100mb before it writes it.

Reason:
I do most my downloading on my eeepc 701 it only has a 4gb hdd but 2gb ram so I download to usb stick so this feature would be useful to help save the life of the usb stick.

2: Rar check for password.

Reason:
More and more rars seemed to be getting passworded and they want you to do some promotion thing (thats never avalible to my location) So I pritty much waste my time downloading it.
What im currntly doing is download only 1 rar file, right click on it and go to propites then archive.
And check that password is absent. It would be nice if altbinz had a option to check for you and pause the rest of the files if ones detected.

I dont know if these are even posiable to add but thank you for taking the time to read my post.
And thank you for the great program.

Request one is already implemented. Check the setup for caching.

Request two: Read https://www.altbinz.net/wiki/Interface:_Description#Tab:_Download_Queue and check for "set password"

I cant see anywhere in that wiki where it checks if its passworded.
And the problem is I dont know the password and theres no way to get it since the stupid promotions they make to complete arnt avaliable for my location.
And I guess it still wouldnt work if they had a passworded rar in a unpassworded one.

But thank you for pointing out the caching, Guess 0.25 didnt have it so thats why I never noticed it.

Sorry, did not read your piece about RAR that well. Now I understand, you want the collection to pause because it is useless downloading it when you do not know the password.

I barely come across password protected RARs but I can imagine such a mechanism.

The passworded rar check isn't a bad idea. Lately there's been an influx of passworded posts, especially tv. I got burnt on a couple in the past 2-3 weeks, and never before that.

+1 could be a usefull gadget, not terribly important, but would be a nice-to-have-feature in my book.

+1 for the password feature. I believe it's implemented in another prog. Unfortunately binsearch doesn't always pick these password protected files up.

As already pointed out, password checker has limited use if, as is most common with the spammers, the (unpassworded) rar contains another (passworded) archive.

Usenet is currently awash with such scams, and sad to say but by far the best way to manage this is to make sure that you only grab your NZBs from trusted sources. Only use the general (auto)indexers if you know what you're doing, since even with all their resources and ever more sophisticated attempts to filter out the spam, it's just been a game of whack-a-mole. Alt.Binz is not really going to be able to improve on these methods much, so if they get past the indexer checks, they're likely to get past Alt.Binz checks too.

Getting a lot of passworded stuff is a sure sign that you need to rethink your approach, IMHO ...

hi,

i just came across this threat as i was hoping to find help. topic: "passworded files"

i read somwhere that the "*" marked files in alt.binz are the passworded ones - but lately i again downloaded a few without being marked with "*".

in http://www.ngrblog.com/password-protected-rar-files/ they explain the following:
"Step 2 – Newsleecher Leech Tweaks – Pasworded RAR-in-RAR Archives
Those who gain from password protected RAR’s have found a way around the Usenet search engines blocking passworded posts.  To avoid detection they are including a non-passworded RAR archive with a password protected RAR inside.  Staying one step ahead of most nzb sites and newsreaders.  However the Newsleecher v5.0 beta 5+ (download) has a new RAR-in-RAR Archive feature."

so i went to https://www.mysterbin.com/advsearch?q= and it's true - so far i'm protected...

thought this might help.
if you know this already - please forgive me posting it again. i swear i searched before posting ;).

have a good one,
