Auto select similar headers in a group
« on: December 30, 2007, 05:02:33 am »
I think that this is a great program, and I am glad that I came upon it on looking through articles in the Slyck.com. It was listed on the best software section, and by curiosity I downloaded, and I am glad that I did...
Anyway; I thought that the programs major deficit is the lack of header fetch support, but I was totally wrong. One of the best features of the program is to browse the groups without messing up things like the need to download them! This is excellent, and an awesome feature... However, some articles were uploaded as different parts; meaning instead of showing them in a group, they are listed seperately. As an example a movie with 100 parts can sometimes be uploaded as 100 different articles. Although I hate the program, in Newsleecher for instance, by using Alt+S one can auto select similar headers with the same name and compile them into a single download or a nzb file. I would like to have that feature in the Alt.Binz also, and will be greately appreciated (I hope this request is not hidden somewhere within the program itself! ???).

Regards

not exactly the same thing, but in all engines you can enter a resultfilter wich would give u all of the same type (best done before the search)... then you can select all and import them as one nzb only problem could be that there too many results, so that they would be displayed on two pages...

Narrowing your search terms to just the one post is also helpful in situations where the site doesn't autogroup properly.  For example, searching against the REQ number if the post has one.

But I'd imagine that autoselecting wouldn't be that helpful for most search engines, since the number of results that can be displayed per page is limited.  So in a situation where it would be worth autoselecting (i.e. with lots of mixed up results), it's likely that the results you need would be spread across many pages anyway.  So narrowing your search and using the filters (including date, poster, etc) would probably work out better.

First of all; I am not talking about searching, and I know how to increase the sensitivity of searches by using exact keywords. I am talking about browsing the newsgroups (sorry that the previous post was not clear on this). While you browse the newsgroups, which I do mostly, you come across with such a mess that your articles were spread among the other unrelated ones; of course, then you can do a search by using keywords of interest, but it would be much easier for the user to be able to auto group with keyboard shortcuts without doing a search.

Thanks for the replies.

ok fastes way would then be copy subject to clipboard then into the filter... and maybe a keyboard shortcut for this... but this would only filter the results already displayed not the other ones... more than this would be difficult i imagine because of aeton, newsleech and yabse beeing independent indexservices

Yes, it's clear what you're suggesting.  But the point is that autoselecting wouldn't be much use if the results you want are spread over more than one page, and if they aren't then using the +/- filter is very quick.  I think it will always be safest to browse for stuff you're interested in, then search for just the post you want.  In practice this should only take a couple of seconds, really.

I see now how to good use the filter check button; it indeed fullfills my demand. Thanks for the answers, and I am sorry that I posted here in this section of the forum; more appropriate would be to post it in the help section.

Thanks again :D.
