Change the newsgroup to download from if there is a crosspost
« on: September 21, 2009, 01:42:01 pm »
Hi, I don't know (I couldn't find any) if there has been a thread or request like that before. The issue is the following and I'm not sure if it's possible, but when there's a post that was crossposted to let's say 3 groups altbinz automaticlly chooses one group from which it then downloads the parts. Is there a way to make an option that let's you choose from which group to download, right after adding to the download tab (either via nzb or search)? The reason I'm asking is, there are some groups that have worse retention/completion(/in some cases also slower download speed) then others, e.g. boneless.  The groups it was posted to are all stored inside the nzb as far as I remember.

i am not completely sure about it, but as i understand it: your search is handled entirely by the searchengine. in the displayed results u can see from which newsgroup the collection is taken. the website provides an nzb and in the case of crossposts decides to which group the nzb is linked. what u could du is limit the search to a specific newsgroup that has the post and from which the nzb should come from.

To address the issue of retention/speed: the main point about using Alt.Binz with NZBs is that groups don't matter, as the files are indexed by Message ID; that is, all the crossposted group headers point to a single article on the server (or they should do if it's working properly).  If one group deletes its header earlier than another, that won't make any difference to the article, since its Message ID remains valid.  By the same token, there should be no reason for slower speeds, since Alt.Binz doesn't actually download from 'groups' at all (the option to 'Select Group' is for other reasons).

If an NSP was culling articles based on the largest group that holds a pointer to it, or deletes it when the first group header is deleted, I'd be very surprised and want to ask them why.  It would mean that the related headers would have to be purged from all of the groups, regardless of 'retention', or the headers would point to nothing. So: if the article is available to *any* group in Alt.Binz, it doesn't matter what group is being listed in the queue.

guess I have missunderstood how altbinz actually handles the downloads. in that case I hereby revoke my request.
