Skip title if already downloaded via RSS
« on: October 01, 2007, 08:44:25 pm »
Is there any way for Alt.Binz to keep a record of what's been downloaded via RSS so that if that title shows up on the feed again it can be skipped?  For example, say I had a Newzbin movie feed set up to retrieve all XviD DVDRips, but I obviously wouldn't want 2 copies of the same movie.  So once Planet Terror (2007) has been downloaded, if it shows up in the feed again it will be ignored.

Well, you won't get mutiple copies of the movie if you have Setup > Download > 'Keep download history' configured properly, since it will just import  the already downloaded files as paused - but you will get multiple copies of the NZB, unless you choose not to save them when adding to queue.

Hmm, maybe an 'Apply filters only once' option, which resets with each manual Clear/Refresh?  This seems to defeat the purpose of having Allow and Deny filters somewhat, though ... (actually, that wouldn't work with your example since you don't have specific titles Allowed, hmm)

Or: download history for RSS saves the actual NZB names instead?

Because I'm a lazy ass, when I do scripted searches of RSS feeds, I just check the folder where I horde my recently (1 month-ish) downloaded NZBs like a good little squirrel (can't be bothered to use a list, lol).  Maybe Alt.binz could do the same. :)

I think this can be a welcome feature to be added in a future version. For instance I use the tvnzb.com news feed. Where today these two files were added: "Robin.Hood.S02E09.WS.PDTV.XviD-AFFiNiTY" and "Robin.Hood.S02E09.HDTV.XviD-BiA". Where for both the description was "Robin Hood 2x09". So, if we only look at the descriptions it would not be too hard to code this feature.
If we keep a list of all the descriptions that have been downloaden (through rss) and check all new items against it, it would do the job. At least al long as the descriptions are clear and defined well. But that is an issue of the feed and not the program.

What do you think?

Greetings,
Eddie.

It depends on what you're trying to do.  In the case of your example, I assume you just want the PDTV or the HDTV.  If so, use one of these filters:

Robin.Hood*hdtv* | A

or:

Robin.Hood*pdtv* | A

or if you never want PDTV:

Robin.Hood* | A
*pdtv* | D

Thanks for the quick replay, but I do in fact not. Both are exactly the same releases of the same file (both 350Mb versions). I have filters to ignore the 720p and the 700Mb versions of that same file. The filters you describe do (for these two) work, but it depends on the naming conventions that the posters use and since they are not always the same, these filters are not sufficient.

What I currently do is let RSS download everything I want, download and unrar them in a different folder than the default download folder. If I have duplicates I will delete them manually. In my opinion RSS downloading should be completely non-invasive for the user. It is almost, except for this...

By the way, I love this great program! With this torrents are rubbish! ;D

Don't let too many people know that. They will start monitoring Usenet, and we don't want that.  ;D

Want to keep Alt.binz the favorite of the USENET Crowd...

WS.PDTV and HDTV in this case describe the different sources from which the files were encoded.  Although they end up the same resolution and filesize, the latter should have better image quality (720p/1080i source vs 480p/576p pure digital source).

As for the filters and dupes ... well, that's a matter of personal preference, I suppose. :)
