Safe(r) Download Mode & Anti-spam filters
« on: July 29, 2009, 12:24:41 am »
I'm pretty sure that most other users will disagree with me on this one, but what the hell, let me throw it out there.

This is a suggestion that Alt.Binz should have a Safe(r) Download Mode enabled by default, which would block downloading - unless manually over-ridden - of:

1. All .exe files, or any extension listed on an 'unsafe' list.

2. Anything crossposted to more than 3 groups (as listed in Newsgroups or Xref header) = a strong indicator of virus spam.

3. Anything from suspect origin, taken from a blacklist matched against info in key header fields - Path, Message-ID, From, etc.  Blacklist should be updatable from altbinz.net, as well as be user-configurable.

4. Any NZB smaller than X bytes.

5. Anything posted to list of 'unsafe' groups

... and so on.

I know most users will take the usual precautions with anti-virus and firewall, only using reliable sources, etc., and the above won't catch all spam posts by any means, but usenet has become quite a mess in the last year - and it would be good to know that some thought is being given to user security on the client-side as well.

spamming is killing search results.
As a consequence, i don't search any more, just browse reference sites

i was looking for an over all "Ignore List" of specific file types but this would essentially do the trick for me so i'm adding my +1

I can see how this would 'protect' some people against viruses/trojans/spyware. However, it's not Alt.Binz job imo. The way I see it this is solely the end user's problem and responsibility.
By all means go ahead and implement this if it's easily done as I'm sure it'll help quite a few people. Just make sure it's all configurable (aka can be turned off if the user so desires).
Something I would appreciate would be a customizable ignore list. It would be nice if we could filter on either file name, subject or poster. It would also be nice if we could use regular expressions in the filter. Kind of like Newsbin Pro does it.

All in all I'm in favor of adding something like you propose as long as I can configure it as I see fit. I should always be the one that decides what's downloaded ;)
Anyway, +1 on this.
