I'm pretty sure that most other users will disagree with me on this one, but what the hell, let me throw it out there.
This is a suggestion that Alt.Binz should have a Safe(r) Download Mode enabled by default, which would block downloading - unless manually over-ridden - of:
1. All .exe files, or any extension listed on an 'unsafe' list.
2. Anything crossposted to more than 3 groups (as listed in Newsgroups or Xref header) = a strong indicator of virus spam.
3. Anything from suspect origin, taken from a blacklist matched against info in key header fields - Path, Message-ID, From, etc. Blacklist should be updatable from altbinz.net, as well as be user-configurable.
4. Any NZB smaller than X bytes.
5. Anything posted to list of 'unsafe' groups
... and so on.
I know most users will take the usual precautions with anti-virus and firewall, only using reliable sources, etc., and the above won't catch all spam posts by any means, but usenet has become quite a mess in the last year - and it would be good to know that some thought is being given to user security on the client-side as well.
