Title: User Survey: Search Engines
Post by: Hecks on July 03, 2009, 08:13:51 pm
It's poll time here in Alt.Binzland, the topic is integrated search engines, in two parts, bringing together stuff from other threads:

[1] Vote for the one already integrated in Alt.Binz that you use MOST OFTEN (I know, shame you can't choose more than one :P) and post your reasons. Do a top 5 if you must. :)

[2] Post suggestions for new search engines.  If we have enough of a list after a while, we can have a new poll. ;)

2) Merlins-portal

A friend came across this a while ago, and let me know about it just after he got me into newsgroups (I'm a converted rapidshare/megashares addict).

Arguably it's not the best in terms of content and speed of content getting onto the site, but it's incredibly easy to use and I've found some good gems on there.

On a side note, if anyone has any sites similar to this with decent content (I currently use nzbindex,tvnzb,merlins-portal, and didn't like the clutter in nzbmatrix) I'm happy to accept pm's.

Yet again, thanks Rdl for this amazing tool thingymajig.  ;)

But it's not for free ... thats a prob ?

For the German users and of course also the differently languages ones would not be bad, e.g., nzb.to! Very clear and absolutely free of charge. :)

This is right with him announce! But you have implemented also newzbin. And there one must also announce himself! Who wants could announce itself with Nzb.to. Is also absolutely free.

Hi there,

what about adding the searchengine nzbclub.com?
because I was looking for an indexservice with retention over 400 days (here 500+ retention),
interesting for users of high capacity usenetproviders.
even supersearch has only 370 days

p.s. I've searched for sites in http://www.dmoz.org//Computers/Usenet/Search/NZB//

what are your experiences with it.
is it worth to be added?

Tried 5 casual search (getting answers in binsearch and bintube) and got no result...

newzbin has by FAR the best searching and downloading features with good bookmarks and information.... but their retention hasnt really kept up with my giganews service lately.. so ive started to branch out into nzbmatrix, nzbsrus and binsearch when looking for older stuff.. but apart from their retention.. they really are nowhere near as good...

From my experience Newzleech and NZBIndex are light years ahead of binsearch...

and yet binsearch dominates in popularity here.

How so? Also, the poll suggests Newzleech is winning (44% vs 32% for Binsearch) which astounds me.  Newzleech has been broken for a very long time - since the last round of updates and the terrible implementation of partial-word search, not to mention the over-zealous grouping.  NZBIndex speed has recently improved, but is still some way behind lightning-fast Binsearch.  NZBIndex is very reliable on results, though.  An excellent second to Binsearch.

binsearch has rolled back retention to 300 days.. besides  it got a terrible search engine. sometimes u just cant find something  because u havent entered the exact name with all dots(!)  lol.
all in all there is no ultimate index site out there..

I have used Ultrasearch with Ultraleecher and found it a good search engine.  Its not free, but if it doesn't have a closed membership it would be a good choice.

Since Newzleech has been closed, what are we supose to do?

Any free search engine, yet voted for Binsearch. Though i agree it is hopless for searches. Try V 2009 HDTV or V.2009 HDTV none work. Need to search for V 2009 HDTV then use the + V.2009 HDTV for it to work.

Shame about Newzleech going down, that was my backup for everything binsearch couldn't find. Yet it to was a sad search engine. Then there is NZBIndex i suppose between the three when all working i find a fair percentage but never all.

I know there is the web sites to use, but am one for doing via search control tabs that Alt.Binz has got built in. Would be nice to see more, a lot more. More so for those that we can use "V 2009 HDTV (meaning find all with just those or "V.2009" for been accurate everytime.

I know i have read here that some files are numbered before the name, but say for tv episodes that number is not for all the program name, it's normaly just for that episode.

Melins portal i did go there once, javascripted, so never went back. Tough what if that search engine was on a AltBinz tab and was free to use, sure i would use that. Will use any search engine on a Alt.Binz tab that is free to use. :)

Don't exaggerate.  Like many search engines, there's a minimum word length on keyword/full text searches, and a list of stopwords (yes just like google). Use quotation marks around strings to search for phrases e.g. "V.2009" hdtv or "V.2009.S01E04" hdtv, etc.  Binsearch always did better than Newzleech with searches like this.  It's just called: learning how to search.

Used to be newzleech and now nzbindex.

Binsearch in indeed horrible with tv show searches  :o as it's always grouping the episodes from the same release group.

For example i type "how met mother s05e07" and it only gives the 30MB par2 files.
To get the rar files for this episode you need to go get them with the s05e06 search, the use the "fetch collection info" action.

I notice that with CTU posts where the filename ends in ep number - but only sometimes.  It's an odd one, to be sure.  You can see the reason if you look at the collection urls, which expose the grouping:

E07:
http://binsearch.info/?b=ctu-x264-how.i.met.your.mother.507&g=alt.binaries.multimedia&p=teevee%404u.net+%28teevee%29&max=250

E06:
http://binsearch.info/?b=ctu-x264-how.i.met.your.mother&g=alt.binaries.multimedia&p=teevee%404u.net+%28teevee%29&max=250

Testing against other CTU stuff suggests that the number 506 always gets stripped from filename end (but not other ep numbers). So you'll see this error for any CTU release with a S05E06 in it ... like Bones, Criminal Minds, etc.  As far as I can tell, other season/ep numbers and groups are fine.  Would be interesting to know if not, though.

Have you done any result comparisons on NZBMatrix or MerlinsPortal?  Both seem to be nice NZB and search engines sites and offer sub categories to help filter searching.  Both offer free access with expanded access with a small donation; key being payment is not required.

I was playing with NZBMatrix and Merlin last night and I think I just noticed something interesting.  It looks as though they both only index nzbs which are submitted.  It looks like BinSearch indexes headers and generates the nzb on demand.  Can anyone confirm this, or am I missing something.  It could also be that I should have gone to bed when I was sleepy instead of staying up til 4am.

Another suggestion - in case developing gets boring or you have nothing else to do.. ;)

The easynews global search. It's just for members but it has the absolute advantage that's also quite a challenge:
While listing every search result, it also provides thumbnails for each search hit (mouse-over popups & linked). This way you can easily discard fakes (WMV mostly). Passworded crap does of course not even show up due to the way easynews handles the files.
In case my standard procedure hits on passworded files, I switch to easynews global search, pick out the proper target and let me generate an NZB that I let altbinz process.
h**ps://secure.members.easynews.com/global4/search.html

Well, I don't really expect you to take this challenge, since it would mean a whole lot of work other than "just" add yet another seach provider... but I'd really amazed if you do:)

Most of the time I use good old BinsSearch. It is fast, index most of the groups and it list up to 900 days.
Also the intergration into AltBinz is great. You can use al sort of search options (size, retention, nfo etc.)
Best of it that it's (still) free with no registration.

My top 3 would be:
1. BinSearch
2. nzbIndex
3. YabSearch

1. NZBClub = used about %80 of the time

Very effective 1 line results for teevee & web-dl posted material
Accepts  - (minus) validator
viewed nfo files are saved with efnet posting number
A real drawback with NZBClub is it results are more than 1 line, as you can only select one

2 NZBIndex = used about %12 of the time
Accepts  - (minus) validator

3. Binsearch = used about %8 of the time

I've noticed recently a can't find a lot of things that are available on any of the included searches.  =\  They all used to be great, but not so much anymore.

NZBIndex is about the only one that even returns results for me about 2/3 of the time.

Can we add some new ones?

I came across this one earlier today.  It had "Screamers.1995.WEB-DL.1080p.DD5.1.H.264-MXB" which none of the included ones had.  I also access dognzb and nzbgeek and they both had it listed, but they are paid sites unlike the one below.
